Reverse shoulder replacement is a specialised procedure for patients with severe shoulder arthritis combined with rotator cuff damage. Unlike traditional replacements, the positions of the ball and socket are switched (“reversed”). This design allows other muscles, especially the deltoid, to compensate for the damaged rotator cuff.
The surgery is done under general anaesthesia and involves removing damaged joint surfaces and replacing them with artificial components.
Advantages of reverse shoulder replacement:
Restores shoulder function when the rotator cuff is torn beyond repair
Reduces pain and improves mobility
Allows daily activities without significant restriction
Patients usually notice significant pain relief soon after surgery, with physiotherapy helping to regain function. This procedure is especially beneficial for older adults with complex shoulder issues.
