Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) uses a suturing device called the Overstitch which fits the end of an endoscope and delivers full-thickness sutures, thus, plicating the stomach and reducing the gastric volume. The bariatric endoscopist places sutures on the patient’s stomach on opposing walls, resulting in a tube-like gastric cavity. This procedure is minimally invasive and incision-less, thus, leaving no scars and requiring a short hospital stay of up to a day.
Post-procedure, the patient is kept on a liquid diet for 3 weeks, followed by a puree / soft diet for another 1-2 weeks, followed by a regular (modified) diet. The weight loss is then monitored with periodic follow-ups as an outpatient by the Multidisciplinary Team in the Healthy Weight Clinic.
