Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Widely considered to be the ‘Gold Standard’ bariatric procedure, roux-en-Y gastric bypass is generally recommended to people with:

  • BMI>35 and diagnosed with obesity-associated disorders, such as diabetes, sleep apnoea and hypertension

  • Acid reflux disease and morbid obesity

  • BMI>40

In this combined mal-absorptive and restrictive procedure, a small (30ml) upper stomach pouch is utilized for restricting the food intake of the patient. Besides, the mixing of food with digestive juices is also delayed by bypassing a portion of the small bowel to mitigate the absorption of calories. In many cases, patients feel quicker satiation which prevents their desire to eat.

This procedure has many benefits, such as:

  • It is completed quickly

  • Can reverse hypertension and diabetes

  • Significantly reduces hunger pangs

  • Makes the patient feel satiated even after the consumption of a small amount of food
