Dr H Sudarshan Ballal said, “Most of the large urban centres, including the metropolitan cities, have registered fairly good vaccine coverage. The requirement to get vaccinated in order to attend work or to travel or even shop coupled with relatively lower vaccine hesitancy could have played a role in a large number of people getting the shot. It is wonderful news that rural areas too, in general, are not lagging behind in vaccination. In fact, data show that many districts, on average, have provided over 80 per cent of their population with at least one vaccine dose; the coverage of the second dose is about 30 per cent. Fortunately, there does not seem to be a sharp urban-rural divide in terms of vaccination coverage.”

Dr H Sudarshan Ballal said, “The government should be congratulated for its tremendous effort to complete 100 crore vaccinations. Fighting vaccine hesitation, making immunization free of charge, ensuring equitable distribution of vaccines, and managing immunization in rural areas. It was not easy for the government. The government has managed it with precision. The role of Karnataka has also been important in this campaign. The state has been ahead in the fight against Corona from the very beginning and has merged as a model state in COVID management”.

About the story
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the healthcare sector across the world. In India, digital technologies have played a key role in pandemic response. Digital platforms like MyGov, Aarogya Setu and Cowin have played a critical role in information dissemination, contact tracing and vaccination efforts. Communities have used social platforms to support each other, and healthcare providers have scaled up virtual services in order to meet the demand for diagnosis and care.

I think people need fungible infrastructure, which can function as high dependency or ICU beds sometimes and go back to normal beds later. I think this is one adaptability that is required. Secondly, the digital capability of hospitals. Given that social distance and other needs would continue for the future, people may not want to travel a longer distance for health care, so digital routes to access health care is something that hospitals will have to factor in either by retrofitting whenever required or factoring in the design when you construct new hospitals so that digital routes and digital adaptabilities are something that you may require, said Mr. Dilip Jose.

The third wave is predicted to hit in October. It could be a third wave or it might just be the tail of the second wave continuing for a longer period. Unlike the first wave, the second wave is tapering down slowly. But I do believe that even if a third wave does hit, the numbers will be small, the disease will be less severe and, overall, easier to manage, said Dr. H Sudarshan Ballal.

The introduction of a unique health identification card at the national level would be a gamechanger in monitoring, providing, and managing healthcare for all citizens. But, we will have to wait and see the implementation of the project while making sure that the privacy of an individual is maintained at all costs, said Dr. H Sudarshan Ballal.

While it is extremely important to continue with the levels of testing conducted in the state and maintain the momentum, it is also important to ensure the business viability of private laboratories, said Dr. H Sudarshan Ballal.
