Lasik eye surgery
Lasik eye surgery

LASIK surgery is a revolutionary refractive surgery that aims to provide clearer and sharper eye vision. Known as Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), this surgery is a procedure that corrects vision issues eliminating the need for spectacles or contact lenses. Common amongst those requiring farsighted or nearsighted glasses, LASIK surgery modifies the dome-shaped transparent tissue called cornea at the front of your eye. The primary aim of LASIK is to refract light rays to focus on your retina.

Who is eligible for LASIK
Before you choose to undergo this procedure, your ophthalmologist will perform a complete examination of your eyes. Upon completion, he will decide whether you are eligible for this procedure or not. While most candidates are deemed eligible, persons having very large pupils or thin corneas are ruled out. If your job is significantly affected by this procedure, then LASIK might not be for you. Sportspersons indulging in contact sports that include blows to the face are not eligible for this surgery.
The moistness of your eyes will also be evaluated. A side effect of LASIK surgery can be development of dry eyes. In order to prevent this condition, your doctor might recommend precautionary treatment for the same. The doctor will use an automated instrument to create a map of your cornea. He will also measure the curvature and thickness of your cornea so there is no room for errors.
Certain
doctors also use wavefront analysis that sends light waves through the eye to provide a precise and in depth look into the patient’s eye. This technology has simplified the process of LASIK and assisted several doctors in their operations. The patient should reveal all their previous medical history to the doctor and inform him of any allergies or existing medical problems. The doctor should have knowledge of ongoing treatments or drugs taken by the patient.

What not to do before LASIK

It is strictly prohibited to wear contact lenses two weeks before your scheduled surgery. This is because contact lenses can distort the shape of your cornea, resulting in inaccurate measurements which lead to unnecessary complications during surgery.

On the day of the surgery patients are advised to discontinue use of any kind of makeup, lotions or perfumes on the face. The doctor can also prescribe certain cleansing drops to remove debris or unwanted dirt. Since the patient will not be able to drive immediately after the surgery, he should arrange for a pick up from the doctor’s clinic. It is advisable to avoid driving a vehicle for a few weeks after the surgery.
Patients should try and avoid television or mobile phone screens for a few days after the surgery. It is strictly advised not to rub the eyes vigorously for a few days as it can cause itchiness and infections. The medicines and drops prescribed by the doctor should be regularly taken as per the doctor’s instructions.
Any surgery, no matter how minor involves some sort of risk. However, LASIK is a simple and relatively safe procedure that significantly improves the patient’s quality of life. Preparation and utmost care will improve the chances of minimal complications and a complete success rate.
