Automated Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Implantation
The automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) is a tiny electronic device that is implanted in the chest to prevent sudden death from cardiac arrest caused due to fast heart rhythms called tachycardias. The surgery involves inserting insulated wires into the veins near your collarbone and moving them through X-ray images, to your heart. The ends of these wires are secured to your heart and the other ends are linked to a generator implanted under your skin below the collarbone. This is done under local anaesthesia and you may have some pain where the incision was made.
Why choose Manipal Hospitals
Device implantation needs specialised training. Our multidisciplinary team of electrophysiologists (EPs), cardiologists in Jaipur, surgeons, and internal medicine doctors come together to employ the mapping technique to implant AICD under their skilled care.
You need AICD if you have a history of coronary artery disease and heart attack that has weakened your heart, a thickened or enlarged heart muscle, or a congenital heart disease.
This intelligent device is programmed by your doctor to monitor your heart rhythm round the clock. Whenever your heart beats fast, the device sends tiny electrical signals to correct your heart rate and will then send a shock automatically to restore it to its normal heart rate.
Since it’s a minimal invasive surgery complications are few. However, some patients could have swelling or bleeding at the site of the AICD implant or infection, allergic reaction to the medications, blood leaking through the heart valve of the device wires, damage to the vein of the AICD site, etc.
AICD is presently the standard procedure for cardiac arrest survivors or those at risk of cardiac arrest. The patient is admitted for one or two days for this minimal invasive implantation procedure. Book an appointment to know more.
Infection control protocol
While AICD and all implantation procedures are conducted under the most sterile conditions, to avoid minimal chances of patients contracting infections, we at Manipal Hospitals follow a strict infection control protocol to protect our patients. Patient comfort and safety is at the root of our treatment endeavours.
