FAQ's

Liver transplantation involves replacing a damaged liver with a portion of a healthy liver from a living donor or entire liver from a deceased donor.

Liver transplantation is required when a patient’s liver has stopped working completely due to severe damage caused by either drug overdose, alcohol abuse, certain infections or cirrhosis.

Liver transplantation does not always cure a hepatitis B victim. The virus may still survive in the blood, so hepatitis B infection often reoccurs after the surgery, and sometimes with increased severity.

Mainly, individuals with chronic or acute liver failure require liver transplant surgery to survive.

In India, most of the donated liver come from living donors, the majority of whom are relatives.Alternatively, the liver can also be taken from deceased donors who died recently.

The blood group of a donor is matched to the recipient’s and should be compatible.

Positive and negative are not taken into consideration while matching blood for a liver transplant.

HPB stands for Hepato-Pancreatic-Biliary system- meaning surgery of the liver, pancreas and biliary system.

Symptoms of a blocked bile duct are skin yellowing (jaundice) or yellowing of eyes (icterus) caused by a buildup of a waste product called bilirubin, fatigue, weight loss, itching, light brown urine and fever.

A surgical robot is a machine controlled by a skilled surgeon who manipulates mechanical arms from a console near the patient’s bed.

The procedure uses much smaller incisions than traditional “open” surgery, which helps reduce blood loss and postoperative recovery times.
