Foreign Body Removal

Foreign body removal treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore

It is common for babies to ingest small objects they can grab, such as buttons, paper clips, food substances, toys, insects, etc. Older children can also get into trouble during play and sometimes get objects lodged in their ears or nostrils. Foreign things in the nasal or ear passages can cause symptoms such as pain, redness or fluid drainage. Removing such things can be challenging if they are lodged deep, with swelling and other complications.

Foreign body removal from the ears

Some small items can be pushed into the ear canal by children, such as food particles, crayon pieces, buttons, pins, and insects. While some objects placed in the years can cause symptoms, others don't. If you suspect your child might have pushed an object into the ear, it is advisable not to try to remove it alone as it might send it deeper into the ear canal. Treatment in the hospital can be in the form of,

  • Removing the lodged object using a specialised tweezer. The thing is located and gently grabbed with the tweezer and pulled out.

  • If the object to be removed is too small and made of metal, a magnet may be used.

  • The ear canal may be flushed with water to bring the object out.

  • A medical vacuum device may be used to suck the foreign objects out.

Post removal, the ear is examined again, and medicines might be prescribed if there is any damage.

Foreign object removal from the nose

Foreign objects can enter the nose while playing with soft things, such as modelling clay, or smelling something. These can include entities such as clay, tissue, foam, pieces of toys, erasers, crayon pieces, etc. Symptoms of a foreign object lodged in the nose include nasal drainage, continuous sneezing, swelling and redness, and sometimes blood in the nasal discharge.

Foreign body removal treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore for such cases would be immediately removing the lodged object from the nose using various methods. In more severe cases, sedating the child to perform the extraction procedure may be necessary. Some of the techniques involved in extracting foreign objects from the nose apply:

  • Using a suction device to grab and pull the thing out.

  • Using long forceps-like instruments to reach the things in the nasal cavity.

  • The object may also be "blown out" of the nose. The paediatrician would ask you to hold down on the clear nostril and blow forcibly into the child's mouth to blow the object out.

Nasal drops or antibiotics might be prescribed after the procedure to relieve the symptoms and treat infections.

Foreign objects in the throat

Foreign objects lodged in the throat are a choking hazard and can quickly become a medical emergency if the object completely blocks the airway. Children tend to put things in their mouths like other objects and swallow them. These objects can get lodged in the throat and stop the food pipe and the windpipe. Many objects can get lodged in the throat, such as food particles, grapes, marbles, pebbles, seeds, buttons, nuts, toy parts, coins, etc.

If the child begins to choke, they will show symptoms such as,

  • Coughing at first

  • Gagging or choking

  • Wheezing (a high-pitched whistling sound)

Sometimes the object might slightly clear the airway enough to allow the child to breathe; however, the things are still in place, and they continue to show symptoms such as,

  • Hoarse voice

  • Continuous cough

  • Unable to speak

  • Blueness around the lips

  • Fainting
