ECMO Survival Chances & Availability | Dr. Rajesh Mohan Shetty | Manipal Hospital Whitefield

In this video, Dr. Rajesh Mohan Shetty, Consultant – Critical Care Medicine, Manipal Hospital Whitefield, Bangalore, discusses how ECMO is not a treatment in itself but a supportive therapy. Survival depends largely on why the patient was put on ECMO and whether the condition is reversible. Recovery can take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. Because ECMO is highly complex and resource-intensive, it is usually available only in large hospitals with advanced facilities. The cost is mainly driven by the circuit and initiation, bringing the ECMO-specific cost to about ₹4–6 lakh. Additional expenses come from ICU care and treatment for the underlying illness, which vary depending on the duration of the hospital stay.
