Vascular access procedures for dialysis in Hebbal, Bangalore

AV Fistula

An AV fistula is a connection made by a vascular surgeon to provide vascular access treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore between an artery and a vein to allow the blood to flow more freely. The arteries transport blood from the heart to the body, and the veins transport blood from the body to the heart. The speciality of vascular surgeons lies in the surgical repair and replacement of blood vessels through surgery. The surgeon usually implants the AV fistula in the forearm or upper arm of the patient.

In the presence of an AV fistula, there is an increase in pressure and blood flow exerted on the vein. This causes the vein to grow more substantial due to the increased pressure. Using the more prominent vein makes it much easier to access the blood. In the absence of this type of access, regular hemodialysis treatments could not be provided. In the same way that a straw collapses when pulled hard, a vein that has not been treated cannot tolerate repeated needle insertions, as it will collapse when inserted repeatedly.

AV Grafts

An AV graft is a looped plastic tube used to connect the arteries and veins of the body. A vascular surgeon performs the AV graft surgery in an outpatient centre or a hospital the same way as they perform the AV fistula surgery. It is possible that in the case of an AV fistula, the patient may need to stay in the hospital overnight. However, many patients can return home after the procedure has been completed. As soon as the surgeon is ready to place the AV graft, local anaesthesia is used to numb the area where the graft will be placed.

In most cases, AV grafts can be used within two to three weeks after surgery. There is a much higher risk of infection and clotting problems with AV grafts as opposed to AV fistulas when compared to AV grafts. There is a risk of blood clots forming in the graft if they repeatedly occur, as they could prevent blood from flowing through it. A well-cared-for graft can, however, last for several years.
