Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)

PFT treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore

PFT treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore is a minimally invasive test that determines the function of your lungs. These tests may be ordered by a medical professional,

  • If you are showing signs of lung disease,

  • When you are regularly exposed to certain substances at work,

  • For the determination of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),

  • Before you undergo surgery, your lungs will be assessed to determine how well they are functioning.

Tests of pulmonary function

PFTs can be classified into several types. It will depend on the health condition that your doctor is seeking to diagnose, and one or more of the following tests may be necessary.

Spirometry

As part of your PFT, you may be asked to undergo spirometry, a painless test usually performed in a doctor's office, hospital, or PFT laboratory. Spirometry is important for detecting asthma, COPD, and other respiratory diseases. In other words, it measures how much air you can exhale after you have taken in a large amount of air and how quickly you can do it.

Cardiopulmonary exercise test

The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is a specific cardiovascular stress test that measures your ability to exercise and identifies any limitations you may have in your activity level. A doctor's office or PFT laboratory is typically carried out on a treadmill or stationary bicycle.

Bronchial provocation test

An evaluation of your lungs' sensitivity to stimulation is carried out during a bronchial stimulation test. By performing this test, you may determine if your symptoms are caused by asthma or if they are not.

Exhaled nitric oxide test

As with spirometry, an exhaled nitric oxide test calls for you to inhale deeply and exhale completely. It is done through a mouthpiece attached to a monitor, which measures the amount of nitric oxide in your breath.

Test of pulse oximetry

The pulse oximetry test differs from other PFTs in that it is not dependent upon the individual to breathe into a device or exercise under supervision. The purpose of this test is to determine the level of oxygen in your red blood cells.

Plethysmogram test

The plethysmography test measures the volume of gas in the lungs or lung volume. During this test, you will sit or stand in a small booth and breathe through a mouthpiece. By measuring the pressure in the booth, your doctor can determine the size of your lungs.

Performing a diffusion capacity test

This test aims to assess the performance of the small air sacs inside the lungs called alveoli. Carbon monoxide will be breathed as part of the pulmonary function test.

During a pulmonary function test, what happens?

Your procedure can be performed as an outpatient procedure, and you will be able to return home on the same day. The procedure may be carried out during a longer stay in the hospital. There are several ways in which the procedure can be conducted. As a result, it depends on your health status and the method used by your healthcare provider to diagnose you.

  • You may need to loosen tight clothing, jewellery, or other items that could pose a problem during the procedure.

  • If you need to wear dentures during the procedure, you should ensure that you wear them at all times.

  • Your bladder will have to be emptied before the procedure can be performed.

  • A chair will be provided for you to sit in for comfort. A soft clip will be used to trim the tip of your nose. Thus, you can breathe exclusively through your mouth rather than your nose by doing.

  • An instrument called a spirometer would be attached to your mouthpiece so that you can monitor your breathing.

  • You can form a tight seal by sealing your mouth over the mouthpiece with your mouth. For you to inhale and exhale properly, you will be instructed to do so differently each time you do so.

  • If you have dizziness, trouble breathing, or any other problem, your doctor will monitor you closely.

  • Depending on the results of certain tests, a bronchodilator may be administered as part of the treatment. Several minutes after the bronchodilator is administered, the procedure will be repeated.
