Why is MTP performed?

There may be many reasons for performing MTP. These are

What is the Procedure of MTP?

MTP or abortion can be carried out by applying two different methods. One is medical, and another is surgical. 

  • Medical procedure

Medical abortion is carried out by prescribing some medicines. This procedure is applicable before nine weeks of pregnancy, and you will have to take some MTP medications. After one week of taking these tablets, the doctor will examine the conditions to check whether the complete abortion has been carried out or not.

  • Surgical Procedure

If the pregnancy has crossed nine months, abortion is possible through surgery. Typically, two types of surgical methods are followed to perform an abortion. One method is Suction, which can be performed until 15 weeks of pregnancy, and another is Dilatation and Evacuation, which can be performed upto 24 weeks.

Eligibility to undergo MTP

You will have to fulfil certain conditions before undergoing the MTP method. A woman who wants to experience an MTP procedure 

  • Should be in the early stages of pregnancy, i.e., upto nine weeks.

  • Only in exceptional circumstances can a woman undergo MTP upto 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Who is not eligible to undergo MTP?

Sometimes, you may not be able to undergo MTP in case of any critical condition. If you have the following conditions, you may not be eligible to undergo MTP.

  • If you have anaemia or blood disorder

  • If you have high blood pressure or heart disease, or kidney disease

  • If the age of your pregnancy has crossed 20 weeks

  • If you use an intrauterine device

Who can perform MTP?

The law has empowered to conduct MTP procedure only the following persons:

  • A registered medical practitioner who has completed at least 25 terminations

  • A surgeon who is trained in obstetrics/gynaecology

  • An obstetrician gynaecologist having a minimum of three years of experience
