Diagnosis

In order to determine the source of your dizziness, your doctor may perform a series of tests. In addition to the above, your physician will likely look for the following during a physical examination,

  • Dizziness symptoms that are caused by eye movement or movement of the head and disappear within a few minutes

  • When lying on your back with your head tipped slightly over the edge of the examination bed, and your head turned to one side, you experience dizziness with specific eye movements.

  • An uncontrollable movement of the eye

  • A lack of control over your eye movements

If the physician is unable to find the cause of the symptoms, they may order additional tests, which might include,

  • The electronystagmography or videonystagmography procedure: These tests are designed to detect abnormal eye movements. By measuring involuntary eye movements while your head is placed in different positions or your balance organs are stimulated with air or water, ENG or VNG can be used to determine if dizziness is caused by inner ear disease.

  • Use of magnetic resonance imaging: Through the use of a magnetic field and radio waves, cross-sectional representations of your head and body are created. These images can help identify and determine the cause of a variety of diseases by your doctor. To rule out other possible causes of vertigo, an MRI may be performed.

Treatment

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore is not uncommon for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo to resolve on its own within a few weeks or months. A procedure known as canalith repositioning may be recommended by your doctor, audiologist or physical therapist to help relieve BPPV sooner.

Repositioning of the canalith

A canalith repositioning procedure involves several slow and simple manoeuvres to position your head. Particles are moved from your inner ear's semicircular canals filled with fluid to the vestibule, where one of the otolith organs is located, where they are less likely to cause problems and are easier to resorb.

It is recommended that each position be held for approximately 30 seconds after any symptoms or abnormal eye movements have ceased. One or two treatments are usually required for this procedure to be effective.

Surgery

If the canalith repositioning procedure fails, your doctor may recommend surgery. During this procedure, a bone plug is used to block the portion of your inner ear that is causing dizziness. Your ear cannot respond to particle or head movements due to the plug in the semicircular canal. Canal plugging surgery has a success rate of approximately 90%.
