Procedure 

Embryo freezing and frozen embryo transfer (FET) is a process where embryos are created through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), frozen, and then thawed later for transfer back into the uterus. This procedure aims to allow couples who have difficulty conceiving to have a baby later. Embryo freezing is a multi-step process. First, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a lab. The resulting embryos are cultured for several days until they reach the blastocyst stage. At this point, they are ready to be frozen. 

Embryos can be frozen using two different methods: slow freezing or vitrification. Slow freezing is the traditional method and involves gradually cooling the embryos. Vitrification is a newer method that flash-freezes embryos and are thought to be more successful in preserving their viability. Once the embryos are frozen, they can be stored in a cryogenic tank for years. When the couple is ready to conceive, the embryos are thawed and transferred back into the uterus. There are a few risks associated with embryo freezing and FET, but the procedure is generally safe. The most common complication is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which can occur when the ovaries are stimulated with medication to produce multiple eggs. OHSS can cause nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, it can be fatal. Another risk is that the frozen embryos may not survive the thawing process. However, this is rare, and most embryos survive the thawing and can be successfully transferred back into the uterus.

The embryo transfer is a quick and painless procedure performed in the doctor’s office. Once the embryo is transferred, the patient will continue to take medication to support the pregnancy.
