Ovulation Induction and Follicle Tracking

Ovulation induction is a treatment used to stimulate ovulation in women who do not ovulate regularly. This can be done with medication or surgery. Follicle tracking is a process of monitoring the growth of the follicles during ovulation induction. This is done with ultrasounds and blood tests. The goal of follicle tracking is to ensure that the ovaries produce eggs and are of superior quality. Ovulation induction and follicle tracking are used to treat fertility problems in women. These treatments can help women who do not ovulate regularly to become pregnant.

Pre-Procedure

Pre-procedure for ovulation induction and follicle tracking typically involves a few steps. First, a woman will need a pelvic exam to check the size and position of her uterus and ovaries. She will also need a transvaginal ultrasound to assess the number and size of her follicles. Blood tests may also be performed on hormone levels. Once all the tests have been completed, the doctor will develop a treatment plan. This plan may include medication or other interventions.

Procedure

The first step in ovulation induction and follicle tracking is determining when the woman is ovulating. This can be done by charting the woman's basal body temperature or using a home ovulation kit. Once ovulation has been determined, the woman will take a medication, such as clomiphene citrate, to stimulate ovulation. She will then be monitored with ultrasound and blood tests to track the development of the follicles. When the follicles are mature, the woman will be given a human chorionic gonadotropin injection to trigger ovulation. The woman will then be monitored for signs of ovulation and the development of the corpus luteum

The development of the follicle is monitored by transvaginal ultrasound and blood tests for estradiol. When the hair has reached a specific size, usually 18-20 mm in diameter, HCG is given to stimulate ovulation. Approximately 36 hours after the HCG injection, another transvaginal ultrasound is performed to assess the follicle's size and the ovulatory trigger's presence. If everything goes according to plan, the woman is told to engage in sexual activity or intrauterine insemination. After 48 hours—or roughly two days—have passed since the HCG injection, if the follicle has not ovulated, another transvaginal ultrasound is done. Another HCG injection might be administered if the follicle has not yet ovulated. This process is repeated until the follicle ovulates or the woman has had three HCG injections.

Post-Procedure

After the ovulation induction and follicle tracking procedure, the patient will be monitored closely. She will be given a beta HCG injection to trigger ovulation and then monitored with ultrasounds and blood tests. After ovulation, she will be given another ultrasound to confirm that the eggs have been released. The patient will then be asked to have intercourse every other day for the next two weeks. If the patient does not become pregnant, she may undergo another cycle of ovulation induction and follicle tracking. Book an appointment now at Manipal Hospitals.
