Pre-Procedure

An indwelling urinary catheter is inserted in all patients and is maintained for 24–48 hours (about two days). All patients are given a subcutaneous injection of heparin after the procedure. The patient is also on bed rest for several hours to prevent dislodging of the clot. In addition, the patient is instructed to drink plenty of fluids to maintain urine output and prevent the formation of a urinary tract infection.
