Life Support Measures for Patients with Multiorgan Failure in Hebbal, Bangalore

Techniques of life support keep patients alive till their body begins to function. Life support will replace or support multiorgan failure treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore. Some life support procedures are ventilation, for mechanical breathing, CPR, dialysis, tube feeding, etc.  It is a personal decision to stop or decline life support.

What is Life Support?

Several medical procedures that keep a patient living till the body begins to function normally are called life support equipment. It is possible that the body might never function normally.

Methods for Life Support

Mechanical Ventilation

The mechanical ventilation technique will replace or support lung function. A ventilator or respirator is a breathing machine that forces air into the lungs. In the process of intubation, the ventilator is attached to a tube that is inserted via the nose or mouth into the airway or trachea.

Mechanical ventilation generally is employed for short term use but can be used for extended periods, too, where there is irreversible breathing failure. It could be caused by injury to the spinal cord or some progressive neurological disease.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is much like mechanical ventilation. Unlike a breathing machine, ECMO has the ability to directly exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide just as lungs would do.

In the ECMO process, blood is continuously pumped out of the body and sent through several devices in a series so that CO2 is removed and oxygen added. This oxygen rich blood is sent back to the body.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) comprises a set of treatments for when the breathing and / or the heart stops. CPR is employed to support the body and restart the breathing and heart. Some parts of this process are electric shocks (defibrillation), compressions of the chest, and medications for restarting the heart and circulation.

Automated External Defibrillator

A portable device, the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be employed for treating specific types of cardiac arrest. It analyses the rhythm of the heart to check if it is beating irregularly or too fast. It sends an electrical shock (defibrillation) to enable the heart to get to its normal rhythm.

Artificial Nutrition and Hydration

Eating and drinking are replaced by tube feeding in the artificial nutrition and hydration technique.  Nutrients are chemically balanced and fluids are fed via a tube that is inserted directly in the stomach or via the nose in the stomach. In cases where the GI tract’s normal functioning is altered, nutrition is provided intravenously via the Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) process.

Artificial nutrition and hydration will save lives if used till the body heals. Its long-term use could be essential for end-stage and irreversible conditions.

Kidney Dialysis

The dialysis process replaces the function of non-functioning or injured kidneys. During kidney dialysis, a special machine is used to filter excess fluid and harmful wastes from the blood and to restore it to a healthy and normal balance.
