TIPS Shunt Procedure in Bangalore

What is the procedure?

The TIPS treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore is an endovascular treatment for portal hypertension. It involves inserting a metal stent into the hepatic vein, which drains blood from the oesophagus to the liver and spleen.

The stent opens the vein and relieves pressure on the liver. The stent allows for improved blood flow, reducing liver and spleen stress. The procedure is done under general anaesthesia and takes about 90 minutes.

The treatment successfully treats portal hypertension, but some risks are associated with it.

The procedure is considered a minimally invasive option and may be recommended for patients who have failed to respond to medication or other treatments. The risks of TIPS include bleeding, infection, bile leakage and liver damage.

After the procedure, you will be monitored in the hospital for several days. You may need to take antibiotics before and after surgery to prevent infection. After leaving the hospital, you may continue to take medications such as blood thinners until your doctor tells you otherwise.

The risks of TIPS include bleeding, infection and bile leakage. The stent allows for improved blood flow, which reduces pressure in the liver and spleen. The procedure is done under general anaesthesia and takes about 90 minutes.

Why is this procedure performed?

The TIPS procedure treats patients with severe portal hypertension when medical management has failed to control their symptoms. This procedure aims to stabilise or improve blood flow through the liver and decrease blood pressure in the portal vein.

Who is a candidate for this procedure?

The TIPS procedure is not recommended for all people with portal hypertension. It may be suitable for patients with liver failure, kidney failure or gastrointestinal bleeding due to portal hypertension. However, it is not appropriate for everyone with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis.

How is this procedure performed?

The TIPS procedure uses a small tube called an "endoprosthesis" that acts as a shunt between the portal vein and an artery near your groin (femoral artery). The endoprosthesis has two openings: one on each side of your body.

One opening drains blood from your liver into your abdomen, which can be removed by other veins or drained into your bladder through a catheter (tube).

The other opening allows blood from your abdomen and stomach to pass into your liver. The endoprosthesis is placed through an abdominal incision (cut) or laparoscopic surgery, which uses small instruments and cameras to see inside the body during the procedure. This procedure is performed by a surgeon with experience in treating people with cirrhosis.

The other opening takes blood from another artery near your groin, called the external iliac artery, and drains it directly into your liver via a new channel created in your liver's wall by the end prosthesis.  An external device called a pump is used to move blood through the endoprosthesis and into or out of your liver.

The endoprosthesis is made of a strong plastic called polyurethane, and it's shaped like a tube with an opening at each end. In addition to being used as a pathway for blood flow, the device also acts as a scaffold that supports your liver's cells while they grow over time.
