Diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy

Diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore

What is the procedure?

This diagnostic test uses a small flexible tube (endoscope) to examine the upper digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The endoscope is inserted into the mouth and travels through the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). During this procedure, pictures of areas inside the body are taken, and a doctor can review these pictures.

Gastroscopy is most commonly used to diagnose conditions such as bleeding ulcers, stomach cancer, tumours and inflammation. This procedure can also remove polyps (growths) from the stomach and duodenum lining.

A gastroscopy is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. This means that you will be asleep during the procedure but will not feel any pain or discomfort.

A gastroscopy is usually carried out as an outpatient procedure, so you will not have to stay in the hospital overnight after the procedure. A doctor may give you some medication before the test to help prevent any discomfort during the process.

•Look for unusual changes in the lining of the stomach, small intestine or colon.

•Check for signs of bleeding, inflammation or ulcers.

•Examine abnormal growths (polyps) to see if they need to be removed.

•Find out if you have an infection, such as a stomach ulcer or a growth.

•Evaluate bleeding that may be coming from the oesophagus (swallowing blood).

Why is this procedure performed?

This procedure determines if cancer or other abnormalities are present in any part of your digestive tract. It can also be used to remove polyps or tissue samples for examination by a pathologist (a doctor specialising in studying diseases). This can help determine if there are any precancerous conditions or if you need treatment for diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (inflammation of the large intestine).

The procedure is also used to find and remove foreign objects that may have been swallowed. This can include food or toys too small for you to feel in your stomach or intestines. It can also be used to remove stones from the gallbladder. The procedure takes about 20 minutes, and you’ll probably go home the same day. You should be able to eat solid foods within a few hours of your ultrasound. Before a gallbladder ultrasound, you may have blood drawn from your arm. This can help your doctor determine if there’s a problem with the liver or pancreas that might affect the ultrasound results.

The procedure may be done in a doctor's office or hospital and should take about 30 minutes. The doctor will insert a flexible tube called an endoscope through your mouth or anus, allowing the doctor to see inside your digestive tract.

How is this procedure performed?

You will be asked not to eat or drink anything before your appointment time because it will affect how easily your doctor can perform this test. You may be asked to take antacid medicines before your appointment, so you do not have heartburn during the trial.

Your doctor will inject a numbing medicine into the mouth so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure. A small tube is then passed through your mouth and into your stomach, where it collects tissue samples from all over your digestive tract. These tissue samples are then sent to a lab for analysis.
