Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy treatment in Sarjapur Road, Bangalore

Lithotripsy is a medical procedure used to treat kidney stones. The procedure involves using a machine to break up the stones into small pieces that can be passed through the body. Lithotripsy is typically done on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient does not have to stay in the hospital overnight. The procedure is relatively quick, taking about 30 minutes to an hour, and most patients can go home the same day. Some risks are associated with lithotripsies, such as bleeding or infection, but these are rare. Overall, lithotripsy is a safe and effective way to treat kidney stones. Visit our urology hospital in Bangalore for the best treatment.

Pre-procedure for Lithotripsy

There are several things that patients should do prior to their lithotripsy procedure to ensure the best possible outcome:

  • They should drink plenty of fluids starting the day before the procedure to help flush the kidney stones.

  • They should avoid eating or drinking anything for at least six hours before the procedure.

  • They should avoid taking medications that might interfere with the procedure, such as blood thinners.

  • They should make sure to arrive at the procedure centre on time and check in with the staff.

Procedure for Lithotripsy

There are two types of lithotripsy, shock wave and ultrasonic.

Shock wave Procedure

  • Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) uses sound waves to create high-energy waves that pass through the body and break up stones. The waves are created by using a machine called a lithotripter.

  • A lithotripter is a machine that generates sound waves. It has a water-filled cup that the person lies in, and the machine sends the waves through the water and into the body. The waves then travel through the body and break up the stones. Book an appointment to have the best treatment.

  • SWL is usually done as an outpatient procedure. The person will lie on a table, and the lithotripter will be positioned over the person's body. The machine will create sound waves, and the person will feel a tapping or knocking sensation. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Ultrasonic Procedure

  • Ultrasonic lithotripsy (UL) uses sound waves to break up stones. The waves are created by using a machine called an ultrasonic lithotripter.

  • UL is usually done as an outpatient procedure. The person will lie on a table, and the lithotripter will be positioned over the person's body. The machine will create sound waves, and the person will feel a tapping or knocking sensation. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Post-procedure

After lithotripsy, the patient will rest for a short time before being discharged from the facility. It is important to drink plenty of fluids during the first 24 hours following the procedure to help flush the fragments from the body. The patient will be given a list of activities to avoid during the healing process, typically taking one to two weeks. These activities include lifting, straining, and sexual intercourse. The patient will be able to return to normal activities once the fragments have passed.
