Piles/Fissures

General Surgery in Bangalore

Piles are swellings or enlarged blood vessels that occur inside or around the anus and lower rectum. They are also known as haemorrhoids. Piles are common, affecting up to one in three adults at some point in their lives. They usually don't cause any problems but can cause bleeding or pain if they swell up. Piles can develop when the blood vessels around the anus and lower rectum become swollen and dilated. This can happen due to:

  • Straining during bowel movements

  • Sitting on the toilet for long periods of time

  • Pregnancy

  • Being overweight

Why is the procedure performed

There are a number of reasons why someone might need to have surgery for their piles, including

  • When other treatments, such as creams, ointments, or medication, have failed to work

  • When the piles are particularly large and cause pain or bleeding

  • When the piles are prolapsed, meaning they have protruded from the anus and cannot be pushed back in

  • When the person has a fistula, an abnormal connection between the anal canal and the skin around the anus, that is causing problems

Pre-procedures:

  • Pre-surgery procedures for piles may include a physical exam, blood tests, and imaging tests.

  • Your doctor will also review your medical history and discuss your medications.

  • You may be asked to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, before surgery.

Procedure:

  • A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove haemorrhoids and swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and rectum. The procedure is also called a hemorrhoidectomy. To know more consult with our expert doctors in Bangalore.

  • There are two types of hemorrhoidectomies: open and closed. In an open hemorrhoidectomy, the surgeon makes an incision in the anal canal to remove the haemorrhoids. This type of hemorrhoidectomy is usually done under local anaesthesia, with sedation, or with general anaesthesia.

  • In a closed hemorrhoidectomy also called a stapled hemorrhoidectomy, the surgeon uses a special device to staple and remove the haemorrhoids. This type of hemorrhoidectomy is usually done under general anaesthesia. Hemorrhoidectomies are usually done as outpatient procedures.

  • You may have some pain, bleeding, and anal itching. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers and use sitz baths to help ease these symptoms.

Post-surgery:

There is not much you need to do to care for yourself after haemorrhoid surgery.

  • Your surgeon will probably tell you to take it easy for a week or so.

  • You may have some pain and discomfort.

  • You may also have some drainage from the incisions. These problems should go away in a week or two. Visit our general surgery centre in Bangalore.
