Dr. Mallikarjun Kalashetty, Consultant - Haemato oncologist, Hematologist, and Bone Marrow Transplantation Physician at Manipal Hospital, explains blood plays an important role and is made of plasma and blood cells. Individuals may suffer from various blood disorders that can be cancerous or noncancerous and cause many symptoms. Early detection is crucial for better outcomes, so individuals should take medical advice if they experience any uncommon changes. Blood cancer diagnosis involves physical examination, blood tests and diagnostic imaging. Treatment involves chemotherapy, combined chemoimmunotherapy, immunotherapy, bone marrow transplantation and radiation. Specialised cellular therapies are available for some relapsed or refractory blood cancers. According to the doctor, blood cancer treatment has evolved and is less toxic, more targeted, highly personalised and potentially curative, which helps the patient to have a healthy life ahead.

The treatment period following a breast cancer diagnosis is a stressful experience for the patient and family. With that, it is a time to adopt new habits and a course of changes along the way while focusing on recovery. One significant step to reduce the risk of breast cancer is to eat healthily. Oncologists recommend a diet plan, high in fibre, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, for women suffering from breast cancer.
Nutrition plays an essential role in helping the body cope with the effects of cancer and its treatment. A balanced diet can reduce side effects (fatigue) and reduce recurrence risk by taking timely treatment. It helps maintain a healthy weight, improves the immune system, and benefits overall health.

Calcification in the coronary arteries is a sine qua non of the presence of atherosclerotic blocks or cholesterol deposits in the blood supply of the heart. Calcification can occur anywhere in the vascular system of the body, including the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart and brain. The most common cause of this is the duration of the cholesterol block itself, as the chronicity of the atherosclerotic process continues to increase and the calcification of that atherosclerotic block becomes very high.
Why Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) is common in men?
CAC is a cholesterol blockade of the artery. This condition is more prevalent in men because most have risk factors for developing atherosclerotic cholesterol deposits in the blood supply like hypertension, diabetes, smoking, etc. In addition, the likelihood of calcification or cholesterol deposits increases dramatically with age.

TV actress Chhavi Mittal was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2022 and had a successful surgery. Despite defeating the disease, physicians advise survivors to continue specific health measures after surgery, such as frequent checkups, medical testing, or both, to track their successful recovery.
A few days back, she was at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, to celebrate cancer warriors on World Cancer Day. During the event, Chhavi Mittal elaborated on her journey to promote hope to people with cancer. At the event, there were two-panel discussions where the team of medical oncologists and haematologists spoke extensively on the necessity of early detection, screening, and innovative treatment approaches that can aid in rapid recovery.
At the event, the actress said, ”I would like to thank Manipal Hospitals for organizing this event where the cancer warriors can inspire people with their experience. I am also a breast cancer survivor and know that along with the medication, mental strength and courage help fight this battle. It is essential to follow the routine and medication set by your doctors for immediate recovery.”
In a candid chat, Chhavi Mittal revealed what happened when she got to know she had lumps in her breasts, "When my radiologists told me the first time “Chhavi, you have three lumps in your breasts, two of them are fine. But this one is the non-mass enhancement, please get it checked”. And of course, the reports were positive. When I got to know that I had cancer. Somehow fear is not what I felt. I just knew.

"I was in denial when | first felt a lump in my left breast in February 2021 said Dr Vinutha Lakshman, 57, who told herself a thousand times the tumour could not be malignant.
Almost two years and eight chemotherapy sessions later, the physician is free of cancer. "I'm looking after my house. | sing and cook and beautify the place around me," Dr Lakshman said.
"Doctor or not, you hesitate to go to the doctor. It happened with me too. I knew as a physician that with a tumour, I had to go. But there was this wishful thinking that it couldn't be cancer. I then thought of the whole procedure before me. I had to get it tested, a biopsy, and chemo. There were two other doctors we knew who kept postponing their diagnosis and treatment too. One of my sisters cited their examples to me and they are absolutely fine now and are even practising medicine," she said.

The number of cancer survivors has increased tremendously over the past three decades with improvements in healthcare to detect and provide therapeutic treatment. As per international statistics, with current treatment techniques, almost two out of three cancers are curable. However, being cured is often not the end of the road for most cancer survivors. The goals of cancer survivorship care include promoting physical and emotional well-being, reducing the risk of late effects, and providing ongoing monitoring for the potential recurrence of cancer or the occurrence of secondary cancers.

Dr Kakoli Lahkar, Consultant - Medical Oncology. Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road believes that due to a lack of awareness and education and widespread societal stigma, women often avoid seeking medical care until it is much too late, losing their lives to a highly preventable and curable form of cancer. According to Globocan 2020, cervical cancer has over 1 lakh new cases reported yearly. It is the fourth most prevalent cancer in women worldwide, with 85% of occurrences happening in developing nations such as India, where rural women are more likely to be impacted.
Risk Factors
Dr Kakoli Lahkar shares, ‘unlike other malignancies, we know that the persistent presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer, particularly in high-prevalence developing nations. As HPV is a virus that is transmitted through sexual contact, a lack of cleanliness, early marriage and delivery, several sexual partners (especially when the sex is unprotected), repeated childbirths, and smoking. the presence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and persistent immunosuppression owing to infections such as HIV are all risk factors for cervical cancer”.
