Nuclear medicine involves the use of small amounts of radioactive materials (or tracers) to help diagnose and treat a variety of diseases. It determines the cause of the medical problem based on the function of the organ, tissue or bone thereby differing from an x-ray, ultrasound or any other diagnostic test that determines the presence of disease based on structural appearance.
The Nuclear Medicine Department at Manipal Hospitals is one of the first state-of-the-art department of its kind in the state and is equipped with the latest Discovery IQ ‘Gen 2’ with Motionfree technology. IQ ‘Gen 2’ uses the lowest amount of dose possible, and faster acquisition time to acquire high-clarity images like no other PET/CT system, this DIQ PET CT provides excellent patient comfort and accurate diagnosis. The department also has the latest Gamma Camera integrated with CT (SPECT/CT) that helps personalize diagnosis as well as treatment for each and every patient.
With the most recent instruments & software programs the department is capable of diagnosis and prognosis of various diseases such as Myocardial Perfusion, Bone scans, Radioisotope Renal Imaging, and Thyroid scans and also tailor isotope therapies for the treatment of cancer as well as other medical conditions. PET-CT which was named by TIME magazine as the “Medical Science Invention of the Year” in the year 2000 is one of the cutting edge technologies used currently in staging, restaging, assessment of treatment response and in the follow-up of various types of cancer.

A F18 bone scan is a nuclear imaging test used to help diagnose problems with bones. It safely uses a very small amount of radioactive drug called a radiopharmaceutical. This scan is done in case of unexplained skeletal pain, bone infection, spread of tumour to bones or any bone injury that can't be seen on a standard X-ray.Read More
This test is mainly to look at the blood supply of the heart, both during exercise and rest. In some cases, if the stress part of the scan looks normal, rest scan may not be performed.Read More

Manipal Hospital Bangalore ensures that the best facilities and care is always delivered with exceptional precision. We have the best of doctors, in every field, focused on excelling themselves with superior care, through their expert knowledge in the respective field.
Treatment & Procedures
The Department of Nuclear Medicine is well-equipped with all the requisite equipment. It has a GE 16-slice PET-CT scanner unit (DISCOVERY IQ 5 ring system) that comes with a whole range of features. One of the most patient prominent features is Motionfree technology that digitally captures accurate clinical images despite respiratory motion for the patient. Various Nuclear Medicine investigations like myocardial perfusion scan, radioisotope bone scan, Thyroid Scan and iodine-131 scans are available at our department.
The Types Of Scan Offered At Our Department Are:
Therapeutic procedures include the use of radioactive iodine treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer, samarium therapy is provided for painful bone metastases and P-32 therapy for hematologic disorders (such as thrombocytosis). Transarterial radioembolisation(TARE) with yttrium-90 microspheres are being used for therapy in primary and metastatic liver cancer patients. Alternate options of treatment of liver cancer using Rhenium is also offered.
We have been one of the pioneering departments in this country in Radioguided surgery (Sentinel Node biopsy of early breast cancers, head & neck and gynaecological malignancies, Minimally invasive Parathyroid surgery & ROLL).
We are one of the few centers in the country to do Alpha therapy (using Actinium225) for metastatic Carcinoma Prostate. Apart from this, we also regularly offer PRRT for metastatic Neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancers.

An endoradiologist will intravenously inject a radiopharmaceutical into the bloodstream. This is also known as a contrast material. Once the material has been fully injected, the endoradiologist will be able to use external gamma cameras to produce diagnostic imaging.
Nuclear medicine has been standardized to pose as little risk to patients as possible. However, there is always a component of risk when it comes to radiation, which is why nuclear medical professionals always follow the principle of ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable)
In most cases, there is little to no effect on the patient as the exposure levels are maintained well within the safe limit. If any side effects are expected, your endoradiologist will be able to inform you beforehand.
They are normally recommended or prescribed only when there is a lack of alternatives. The advanced imaging techniques may sometimes be the only way to achieve an accurate diagnosis.
Regular health checkups are an important part of maintaining good health. Routine checkups can help detect any medical issues in their early stages when they are easier to treat.
Manipal Hospitals is committed to the provision of the best possible care to all its patients and to build long term relationships that foster a stronger and healthier community. The patients served by our nuclear medicine department are a testament to this.
