An infant from Indonesia who was born without a fully developed food pipe was successfully treated, after being recommended to Manipal Hospitals. The treatment was conducted by an expert team of doctors led by Dr. Karthik Nagesh, Chairman and HOD - Neonatology & NICU, and Dr. Radhakrishnan CN, HOD & Consultant - Paediatric Surgery & Paediatric Urology.
Multidisciplinary Team | Three Hour Old Baby | Blue Baby Syndrome | Manipal Hospitals India
While diagnosing a complex pregnancy, it was revealed that the baby had a rare congenital heart ailment in the intrauterine stage called transposition of arteries, commonly called the blue baby syndrome. The child underwent an arterial switch operation, which is a complex operation. However, the baby recovered very well and was discharged by the tenth day. With the multidisciplinary team of doctors led by Dr. Ranjan Shetty, HOD and Consultant- Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Karthik Nagesh, Chairman and HOD- Neonatal ICUS, Dr. Gayathri Karthik, Consultant- Obstetrics and Gynecology and Dr. Devananda NS, HOD and Consultant- Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery at Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road, the baby was given a new lease of life.

A baby born extremely premature in Bhopal was referred to Manipal Hospital with a severe brain clot (Grade 4 Intraventricular Hemorrhage). Despite being in a critical state with multi-organ dysfunction, the combined efforts of our Neonatology and Neurosurgery teams, led by Dr. Karthik Nagesh and Dr. K.M. Bopanna, ensured timely intervention through a life-saving procedure. Today, after years of follow-up care, that same child is thriving at 8 years old — healthy, intelligent, and full of life. A journey that began with uncertainty is now a story of hope and resilience.
