The Intrathecal Baclofen Pump consists of a catheter and a pump. The catheter is a thin, flexible wire that transports baclofen from the pump to the spinal canal. The device is implanted under the skin of your abdomen and contains a battery, a microprocessor and a reservoir to store medication. The device is operated using a small computer that signals the pump to provide medication on schedule. The pump is refilled by using a needle filled with medication.
The Intrathecal Baclofen Pump delivers baclofen directly into the spinal canal, and is beneficial for managing severe muscle spasms and stiffness. This device is helpful for patients on whom oral medication was deemed ineffective.
Reduces Muscle Stiffness - This device is effective in reducing muscle stiffness and helps patients feel relaxed and move more easily. This makes patients more comfortable as they rest, sit or sleep.
Reduces Painful Muscle Spasms - It reduces the frequency of painful muscle spasms and cramps.
Reduces Medicinal Side-Effects - As baclofen from the pump goes directly into the spinal canal, much smaller doses are needed. This drastically reduces the risk of side effects, like confusion, dizziness, and sleepiness, as compared to oral medications.
Improved Mobility - The device improves mobility significantly. Many find it easier to walk, sit or move their limbs after undergoing device implantation, due to a reduction in spasticity.
Personalised Treatment - Dosage of medication can be adjusted without surgery by using a computer. This makes treatment customizable, fit for each patient’s needs.
Better Quality of Life - With reduced pain, stiffness and muscle spasms, one can lead a much better quality of life.
Baclofen tablets can cause side effects, like confusion and sleepiness. The pump delivers baclofen directly into the spinal canal, needing much smaller doses and significantly reducing side effects.
The pump does not treat the condition that causes pain. It is only meant for managing severe spasticity like muscle spasms and cramps, thereby providing comfort, improving movement and quality of life.
As the pump is implanted under the skin of your abdomen, you may feel a small bump. But it will not cause excess discomfort and you will get used to it soon.
The battery of the pump lasts for about 5-7 years, after which it needs to be replaced.
Based on the dosage required, the pump may need to be filled every 1-6 months.
