Bengaluru: A 39-year-old man with no known comorbidities or prior symptoms recently experienced sudden weakness in his hands and legs, and noticed that his speech had become slurred. Realising the seriousness of his condition, he rushed to a hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a severe stroke.
"Although he had no risk factors, we conducted an MRI and found that the stroke had hit the brainstem and there was a blockage in the basilar artery — a major artery that supplies blood to the brainstem. We conducted thrombolysis, but he only showed partial improvement. Later, we had to do a mechanical angiogram and remove the clot bit by bit. By the next day, the patient could walk, and now, three months later, he is asymptomatic and back at work. All this was possible because he came to us during the golden period after the onset of stroke," explained Dr Pramod Krishnan, HOD & consultant-neurology, Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road.

For years, nutrition has been linked to physical health but growing evidence now shows that what we eat also plays a vital role in how we feel mentally and emotionally. According to the ICMR, emerging studies suggest a noticeable link between gut microbiota and mental health, proving that what we eat can influence how we think, feel, and even behave.
“At the heart of this link lies a complex communication system called the gut–brain axis," explains Dr. Uddhavesh M Paithankar, Consultant, Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram “Which reshapes how we understand mental wellness. The gut isn’t just about digestion, it’s often called the ‘second brain’, home to trillions of bacteria that send chemical messengers directly to the brain, shaping our moods and emotions in powerful ways."

When it comes to health, men tend to ignore or postpone check-ups until it becomes unbearable. One such aspect that deserves to be addressed is the prostate. The prostate is a small gland that is roughly the size of a walnut, located just below the bladder. It plays an important role in producing seminal fluid. Most men overlook early warning signs of prostate problems, assuming they are just part of aging. Ignoring these small hints can sometimes lead to more serious complications.
Globally, prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men where there are 1.47 million new prostate cancer cases worldwide and is one of the top causes of cancer death with around 3,97,000 deaths occurring globally in 2022. Although not every prostate issue is cancer but it is one of the most common cancers among men that often begins silently without even getting noticed. Detecting it early makes treatment more effective and outcomes much better.

The way we consume entertainment is not always good. Though the entertainment relaxes the mind and refreshes a person, the habit of sitting for hours and binge-streaming through various platforms without even realizing how much time have been passed seems very harmless, but leads to serious medical concerns. According to WHO, the highest rates of physical inactivity were observed in the high-income Asia Pacific region (48%), and people who are insufficiently active have a 20% to 30% increased risk of death compared to people who are sufficiently active. In recent years, sedentary behaviour has emerged as a major, independent risk factor for cardiovascular problems and, in several cases, even death.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that gradually damages memory, thinking, and behaviour, and eventually affects the ability to carry out daily tasks. It typically affects people older than 65 years. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. While there's no cure for dementia, medication and treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy and, in severe cases, deep brain stimulation (DBS) can help manage symptoms and slow its progression. Medications can support memory and thinking, while lifestyle changes and cognitive stimulation therapies can improve the overall quality of life.
