Services Provided

Following are the different types of Laparoscopic, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeries and Non-Surgical Endoscopic Treatments performed at Manipal Hospital, Baner - Pune.

Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeries

  1. Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding: In this procedure, the surgeon places the adjustable silicone ring around the stomach. This procedure is reversible, and the intestine is not affected by this procedure.

  2. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: This procedure involves the removal of a significant portion of the stomach. After this procedure, the size of the stomach is reduced to only 15%, and the stomach looks like a tube or sleeve. The open ends of the stomach are attached through sutures or surgical staples.

  3. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: During this procedure, a small pouch of the stomach is formed through a stapler. This pouch is then connected directly with the small intestine, thereby bypassing the remaining part of the stomach.

  4. Laparoscopic Mini Gastric Bypass: This procedure is also known as a one-anastomosis gastric bypass (SAGB). This procedure involves the formation of a long gastric tube, which is connected to small bowel, through the single anastomosis.

  5. Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch: This procedure is done in two steps. In the first step, sleeve gastrectomy is performed resulting in the removal of approximately 80% of the stomach. In the next step, a significant portion of the intestine is bypassed by connecting the stomach with the end of the intestine.

  6. Revision Bariatric Surgery: This surgery is done to correct or repair the problems that have been associated with the previous bariatric surgery.

Non-Surgical Endoscopic Treatments

  1. Endoscopic Balloon: A temporary placement of a balloon in the stomach in the patient and reducing the volume of the stomach.

  2. Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty: The size of the stomach is reduced with the help of an endoscopic suturing device.

However, there are various riders associated with this inclusion. The guidelines issued by the IRDAI states that the bariatric surgery would not be covered if the surgery is not recommended by the doctor or if the surgery is not done as per the protocols.

Facilities & Services

A few treatments available for bariatrics are: Gastric bypass - This is a procedure that reduces the size of the stomach surgically by dividing the stomach pouch into two. The small intestine is then divided, and the lower end of the divided small intestine is connected to the first part of the stomach pouch. The 2nd part of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine are still connected, so lower down the small intestine, gastric juices produced in the 2nd part of the pouch will eventually mix with the food. The smaller stomach pouch means that the patient's appetite as well as ability to eat is significantly reduced. The bypass can lead to dramatic changes in weight loss. A gastric bypass allows people with chronic weight gain problems to lose weight which would otherwise endanger their lives. The procedure also requires certain dietary restrictions to be followed by the patient post-surgery since some digestive functions will not function as they used to.
