The Latarjet procedure is a minimally invasive surgery used to treat shoulder instability, especially when there is significant bone loss in the shoulder socket (glenoid). Shoulder instability can occur due to repeated dislocations, which may lead to bone damage over time.
In this procedure, a piece of bone from the coracoid process is moved and fixed to the damaged area of the shoulder socket. This strengthens the joint and prevents further dislocations. This surgery can be done either by a small incision or by arthroscopic approach. The arthroscopic approach means the surgery is done through small incisions using a camera, leading to faster recovery, less scarring, and reduced pain compared to open surgery.
Benefits of Latarjet:
Improved stability of the shoulder joint especially in contact athletes
Reduced risk of repeat dislocations
Faster return to normal activities
Recovery usually involves wearing a sling for a few weeks, followed by physiotherapy to restore strength and movement. This procedure is especially recommended for athletes or individuals with high physical activity demands who have had multiple shoulder dislocations.
