When 68-year-old Pradeep Kenneth Daniels from Kodagu felt a familiar, tight pain in his chest in Aug, he feared the worst. A decade earlier, the retired project financial controller had survived a heart attack and received four stents. This time, though initial tests like ECG and echocardiogram appeared normal, a coronary angiogram revealed a 95% blockage in one of his stented arteries — a potentially life-threatening situation.
But instead of undergoing the conventional balloon angioplasty, Pradeep was advised a more advanced procedure: laser angioplasty. Within hours, a laser-equipped catheter vaporised the plaque blocking his artery. A supporting stent was then placed to ensure long-term relief.

Modern lifestyle habits are taking a toll on spinal health.
Dr. S Vidyadhara, Chairman and HOD – Spine Surgery, and Consultant – Robotic Spine Surgery, highlights that long sitting hours, poor posture, and excessive phone use are key contributors to rising spine problems.
Leaning forward while working can make the head feel five times heavier, straining the neck and back. Similarly, frequent phone use causes “text-neck,” adding stress to the cervical spine. Sleeping on the stomach or using overly soft mattresses can further worsen alignment.
Experts advise consulting a spine specialist if pain persists beyond 2–3 weeks or is accompanied by numbness or tingling. Simple changes like raising laptop screens, keeping devices at eye level, supporting the back, and taking short movement breaks every 30–40 minutes can go a long way in protecting spinal health.

Back and neck pain, once considered age-related, are now increasingly affecting younger adults.
Dr. S Vidyadhara, Chairman and HOD – Spine Surgery, and Consultant – Robotic Spine Surgery, highlights that a 2025 study covering over 16,000 patients across 18 states recorded a significant rise in back pain cases between 2020 and 2023, particularly among the 18–38 age group.
Sedentary lifestyles, poor posture, prolonged screen exposure, and limited physical activity are major contributing factors. If left unaddressed, these can lead to chronic conditions that impact mobility and productivity.
Encouragingly, advancements in spine care — including minimally invasive surgical techniques and improved ergonomic practices, are providing effective relief and long-term recovery options for younger patients.

Too much salt, sugar, or sitting, what really puts your heart at risk?
Dr. Keshava R, HOD & Consultant – Cardiology, Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, explains that all three are key contributors to heart disease.
Excess salt intake raises blood pressure, hidden sodium in processed foods adds to the risk, and high sugar levels damage blood vessels, leading to diabetes and artery blockages. Prolonged sitting slows metabolism and promotes weight gain, both harmful to heart health.
He emphasises on simple lifestyle changes: reducing salt and sugar, staying active, and monitoring blood sugar, can go a long way in protecting your heart.

White rice on your plate could be adding more than just calories.
Dr. G. Moinoddin, Director – Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery, South India Region, highlights that high consumption of polished (white) rice is directly linked to rising obesity and metabolic syndrome in southern India.
Lacking fibre and nutrients, polished rice causes blood sugar spikes, fat accumulation, and insulin resistance, increasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
He recommends switching to whole grains like brown rice and maintaining a balanced diet rich in protein and fibre for better metabolic health.

Awareness alone isn’t enough, early action saves lives.
Many women still seek medical help for breast cancer only at stage 2 or 3, missing the most treatable stage 0 (ductal carcinoma in situ). Over half of those diagnosed are now under 45, marking a major shift from a decade ago.
Dr. Amit Rauthan, HOD & Consultant – Medical Oncology, Immunotherapy and Precision Medicine, explains that while awareness has improved, fear, stigma, and lack of regular screening delay diagnosis. He urges women to conduct monthly self-exams, schedule annual screenings from age 30 (or earlier with family history), and pay prompt attention to any breast changes. Lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol and smoking can further lower risk.

Breast health is an ongoing conversation, not limited to a single month or campaign. While medical screenings such as mammograms and sonograms play a vital role in early detection, breast self-examination (BSE) remains one of the most effective and accessible ways for women to stay alert to changes in their bodies. This simple, cost-free habit empowers women to notice any unusual signs early and seek timely medical care.

For decades, the connection between milk and strong bones has been drilled into our minds. But while calcium does play a key role, it’s only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Your bones are living, dynamic structures that rely on a range of nutrients – from vitamin D, magnesium, protein, and vitamin K2, among others – to maintain strength, density, and flexibility. Without these, even the best calcium intake may fall short of truly protecting your skeletal health.
