In this video, Dr. Satish Nair, Academic Head & Consultant – ENT, Head & Neck Surgery & Skull Base Surgery at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, explains when surgical treatment is necessary for adenoids and tonsils in children. Adenoids: Surgery is only considered in specific cases such as poor growth, severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), or frequent ear infections like otitis media with effusion. In most children with nasal blockage or frequent colds, medication alone is effective. Tonsils: Surgery is generally advised if a child has more than 5 tonsillitis episodes in a year that require antibiotics. Removing adenoids or tonsils when necessary does not harm long-term health and often improves sleep, breathing, and overall quality of life in children.
