More than 2 billion adults over the age of 18 years are affected worldwide. This rising prevalence has severely affected fertility in men and women alike and nearly 50 per cent of the cause is attributed to the obese male partner. There is growing evidence that suggests infertility in obese men due to poor sperm generation, increased estrogen (female hormone), decreased gonadotrophin hormone, diabetes mellitus, and sexual dysfunction. This negative effect may be transmitted to the offspring via changes in the DNA of the germ cell of the father.

In India, almost 60-65 per cent population is not able to digest lactose properly. Lactose is a disaccharide, a principal carbohydrate found in milk and milk products. Lactose is hydrolyzed by lactase enzyme in the small intestine into D-glucose and D galactose before it can be absorbed. A deficiency of lactase enzyme is the most common cause of lactose intolerance.
Physiologically, the amount of lactase declines as people age. Adult lactase activity constitutes approximately 10 per cent of that of newborns. Secondary lactase deficiency occurs due to small bowel mucosal injury in conditions like Crohn's disease, celiac disease, radiation-induced injury or giardiasis.

What does your urine say about your health?
Dr. Madhav Sanzgiri, Consultant Urology
Dr. Janet Rodrigues, Clinical Assistant in Urology, Manipal Hospitals Goa
The kidneys act like the filtration system of the human body. In simple terms, they extract all the impurities of the human metabolism and push them out of the body via the urine and urinary system. Hence a simple urine analysis test can give us a lot of important information about the health of a person.
Evaluation of the urine is the most basic test done usually in 2 scenarios:
1. As a part of preventive health checkups
2. As a part of investigations and evaluation of clinical symptoms.
The evaluation of urine includes
1. Gross examination
2. Dipstick analysis
3. Chemical analysis
4. Microscopic analysis
5. Culture and antibiotic sensitivity

What is Chronic Kidney disease (CKD)? Know the link between diabetes and kidney diseases
India is touted to be the Diabetic Capital of the world with estimated 80 Million patients, and with 40% of them being affected with Kidney issues, we can expect many millions of Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) patients attributable to diabetes in our nation.
The kidneys play an essential role in the body: they filter the blood, removing waste products and excess salt and water. If the kidneys become diseased, these toxic wastes and excess fluid build up in the body. CKD patients do not have any symptoms in the early stages; hence, it is important to do tests to diagnose the condition early.
When the kidneys work normally, they prevent albumin from leaking into the urine, so finding it in the urine is a sign that the kidneys are in trouble. Urine tests are recommended once per year in people with type 1 diabetes, beginning about five years after diagnosis, and in people with type 2 diabetes, starting at the time of diagnosis and every six months thereafter.
Estimation of the Serum Creatinine is another simple test than can give us an estimated Kidney Function measured as Glomerular Filtration rate in ml/min. This is also called as Kidney count and a number below 60 indicates trouble said Dr Amol Mahaldar, Consultant Nephrologist, Manipal Hospitals Goa
