Hip Replacement Surgery: Types and Procedure

What is hip replacement surgery? The surgery carried out to replace a worn-out or damaged hip joint is called Hip replacement surgery. During the surgery, a surgeon removes the damaged portions of the hip joint and replaces them with artificial joint (prosthesis) leading to pain relief and functional recovery of the hips. How do you know if you need a Hip Replacement Surgery? A hip replacement surgery is required if If you are suffering from osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis or arthritis, and your symptoms remain uncontrolled despite lifestyle changes and medications You suffered a severe hip fracture Hip replacement surgery can also be considered as a treatment option if you have any of the following: Unbearable hip pain even after taking medication. Your hip pain gives you sleepless nights If you find it difficult to do daily activities like bending, sitting and standing up What are the different types of hip replacement? The different types of hip replacement surgery are: Total hip replacement (most common) Partial hip replacement (Also called hemiarthroplasty.) Hip resurfacing (Commonly carried out in young patients) The total hip replacement surgery also known as total hip arthroplasty is the most common type of surgery. In this surgery, implants are used to replace worn-out or damaged sections of the hip. Partial hip replacement which is also called hemiarthroplasty is mainly carried out in older patients who have fractured hips due to injury. Hip implants that are used in surgery help in mimicking the natural function of hips. They are made up of polyethene (plastic), metal, ceramic or a combination of the materials. Some of the types of hip implants are: Metal-on-Polyethylene (MoP) Metal-on-Metal (MoM) Ceramic-on-Polyethylene (CoP) Ceramic-on-Ceramic (CoC) How long does the Hip Replacement Surgery take? The duration to complete a Total hip replacement surgery takes about one and a half hours. The patient will be transferred to a treatment room following surgery for a couple of hours as the anaesthesia wears off. The blood pressure, heartbeat, alertness, level of pain or relaxation, and the need for treatment will be checked by medical personnel. The patient has to stay in the hospital for a day or two after completion of the surgery. What is the recovery time? After the surgery, within 6 weeks most people will be able to resume their daily activities. Patients can restart their daily habits within 12 weeks of surgery, such as morning and evening walks, swimming, or playing sports. How long do these implants last? The lifetime or longevity of an implant depends upon the following factors: The physical condition of the patient Weight of the patient Accuracy of placement during surgery In general, studies have shown that almost 80% of hip replacements last for at least 15 years, and more than 70% last for 20 years. However, the result may differ from individual to individual depending upon the above factors.
