Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Surgery in Ghaziabad

Hysterectomy is the fourth most common in-patient operation procedure in the United States. About two-thirds of all hysterectomies are still performed abdominally. Compared with the conventional route of abdominal surgery for hysterectomy, newer procedures have been developed for hysterectomy. These include laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomies (LAVH) or total laparoscopic hysterectomies.

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) is the removal of the uterus and cervix through four small (1/2’- 1’) abdominal incisions. Removal of the ovaries and tubes depends on the patient's health condition and requirements.

Patients in the age groups of 45-60 are usually recommended to undergo the procedure in case of uterine cancers, cervical cancer or invasive ovarian cancer. Younger women in the reproductive age bracket of 15 - 45 undergo the procedure only in rare cases. Some common reasons for patients to opt for the procedure may include:

  • Heavy Periods – which can be caused by fibroids.

  • Pelvic Pain – which may be caused by endometriosis, unsuccessfully treated pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), adenomyosis or fibroids.

  • Prolapse of the Uterus.

  • Endometriosis

  • Infection in the ovaries or tubes.

  • Pelvic pain

  • Overgrowth of tissue in the lining of the Uterus.

  • Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

  • Cancer of the Womb, Ovaries or Cervix.

Evaluation and tests

Your doctor will also conduct a full physical examination of your body and you will be asked to undergo the following tests:

  • Blood Test

Blood samples are analyzed in the lab to verify your health vitals, such as blood sugars, hemoglobin etc. and check for possible infection risks.

  • X-rays

Plain X-rays don't detect herniated disks, but they can rule out other causes of back pain, such as an infection, tumor, spinal alignment issues or a broken bone.

  • CT scan

A CT scanner takes a series of X-rays from different directions and then combines them to create cross-sectional images of the spinal column and the structures around it.

  • Ultrasound

Sound waves are used to create an image of the internal organs and scan through for tissue abnormalities inside the body.

Precautions before surgery

Depending on your health conditions, general surgeons may advise you:

  • to go on a medically appropriate diet,

  • ask you to avoid certain medications such as blood thinners etc.

  • consume the prescribed supplements

  • before surgery, you might be required to not eat or drink anything

  • your doctor may prescribe certain medications before surgery

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH)

Once in the operating room, you will receive either spinal and/or general anesthesia before the surgery to keep you from feeling pain. The choice of anesthesia is based on the clinical expertise of the anesthesiologist, and your clinical history.

If you receive general anesthesia, after you are asleep and before the surgery starts: a tube to help you breathe will be placed in your throat.

Another tube will be placed in your stomach to remove any gas or other contents to reduce the likelihood of injury during the surgery. The tube is usually removed before you wake up.

A catheter will be inserted into your bladder to drain urine and to monitor the amount of urine coming out during surgery.

Compression stockings will be placed on your legs to prevent blood clots in your legs and lungs during surgery.

Post Surgery Care

You will be taken to the recovery room and monitored for a short time before going to the observation unit.

Depending on the length of your surgery, you may not be able to eat or drink anything until the next morning or you will be started on a liquid diet. When you are feeling better you may return to a regular diet.

You may have cramping, feel bloated, or shoulder pain.

You may have a scratchy or sore throat from the tube used for your anesthesia.

You will:

  • Be given medications for pain and nausea if needed.

  • Have the tube in your bladder removed in the recovery room.

  • Have compression stockings on your legs to improve circulation.

  • Be restarted on your routine medications.

  • Be given a small plastic device at your bedside to help expand your lungs after surgery.

  • Start walking as soon as possible after the surgery to help with healing and recovery.

  • Stay in the hospital for a few days depending on your overall condition.

As you recover from your hysterectomy, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever or other signs of infection, heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad in less than one hour), severe pain that does not respond to your medications, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, difficulty urinating or a foul odor from your vagina.
