Comprehensive stone disease in Yeshawanthpur, Bangalore is what is commonly known as Kidney Stones. High concentrations of salt, mineral, and chemicals can sometimes form stones or crystals in the urinary tract. These stones can be tiny and easily flushed out of the body or large enough to get stuck in the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. Kidney stones can be of the following four types,

  • Calcium stones: the most common form of kidney stones.

  • Struvite stones: these are formed due to urinary tract infections.

  • Uric acid stones: caused due to high protein diet.

  • Cystine stones: these are formed due to hereditary disorders.

What causes stone diseases?

There can be several reasons for the development of stones in the urinary tract. A few common ones are,

  • Dehydration or not drinking sufficient water or fluids.

  • A person with a history of stone disease is more likely to develop stones.

  • Consuming food rich in protein, salt, sugar and oxalate increase the risk of kidney stones.

  • The side effect of certain medications.

  • Repeated infection and blockage in the urinary tract.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms vary as per the size and location of the stone, but the following are common symptoms a patient will experience,

  • Fever and nausea

  • Acute pain in one side of the lower back or abdomen.

  • Hematuria in some cases, i.e., blood in the urine.

  • Difficulty in urination.

Different procedures

There are different procedures for the removal of stones. Generally, in the initial stages, doctors prefer non-surgical methods. They prescribe medication and ask patients to drink lots of water. But if the stone size is large, doctors opt for surgery. There are four types of surgeries for treating stone diseases,

  • Ureteroscopy: After giving local anaesthesia, the doctor will insert a tiny telescope known as a ureteroscope into the patient's body. It is inserted through the urethra up to the ureter, where the stones are present. Then the Urologist gently removes the stones. But in the case of large stones, they are first fragmented into smaller pieces using a laser and then removed from the kidney.

  • Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS): Like ureteroscopy, a fiberoptic endoscope is inserted through the urethra into the bladder and then passes through the ureter to the kidneys. The Urologist can look inside through the endoscope and break stones using ultrasound, evaporate them through a laser probe, or pull them using surgical forceps.

  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL): If there are many stones or the size is large, or because of their locations, other methods are not suitable, doctors use PCNL. Under this surgery, after giving anaesthesia, the doctor will make a small cut of around 1 cm on the back of the patient, and a tube is placed. Then a nephroscope is inserted directly into the kidneys. Stones are pulled out or fragmented using laser or ultrasound, and fragments are suctioned out. Generally, patients are kept overnight for observations.

  • Mini Perc: Also known as Mini-PCNL, this procedure is similar to standard PCNL. The significant difference is the size of the incision. In the PCNL, it is around 1cm, but the incision in Mini Perc is much smaller than 1cm.
