Breast Biopsy Treatment in Yeshwanthpur Bangalore

A wire localisation biopsy is a medical treatment used primarily to identify and indicate the exact position of an anomaly or lump in the body, usually the breast. It is an important preoperative technique carried out before an excisional biopsy, which is the surgical excision of the mass that has been found. Some uses for this technique are removing non-palpable lumps, extracting small hard-to-locate abnormal areas, obtaining tissue samples when multiple abnormalities are observed on an x-ray, and supporting the surgical removal of a small amount of normal tissue around the abnormality to minimise visible damage.

The wire localisation biopsy comprises two key phases:

  • The initial phase occurs in the X-ray division, where imaging tools such as X-rays and ultrasounds help locate the target location. A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area before inserting a specific hollow needle. A small wire with a little hook at the end is inserted through this needle and attached to the skin using tape.

  • The second phase unfolds in an operating room, guided by the wire and previous imaging. The surgeon surgically removes the lump, extracts the wire, and ensures a sample for pathological analysis. A specimen x-ray is taken to verify the complete removal of abnormal tissue.

Alternative techniques, such as radioactive localisation, may be employed in certain cases. When a pathologist analyses the biopsy results, they can determine if the cells are abnormal but not malignant, cancerous or normal. This information is vital for making decisions regarding future diagnosis and treatment.
