What is Fluoroscopic Imaging?

Fluoroscopy is a medical imaging procedure in which a continuous X-ray beam is used to provide moving, real-time pictures of inside body parts. The fluoroscopy procedure has functions similar to an X-ray that helps medical professionals look at dynamic operations in the respiratory, digestive, skeletal, and reproductive systems.

Applications of Fluoroscopic Imaging

This procedure is used to assess the heart, lungs, kidneys, and solid organs like bones, muscles, and joints. Many therapeutic and diagnostic procedures depend on fluoroscopy, including lumbar punctures, cardiac catheterisation, arthrography, barium X-rays, and image-guided operations like biopsies.

Procedure

The patient is asked to change into a gown during a fluoroscopy procedure, and any interfering clothing or jewellery is removed. Depending on the examination, a contrast substance is administered through swallowing, enema, or intravenous (IV) line. The patient is positioned on an X-ray table, and specific body movements or breath-holding is required during the procedure. The fluoroscopic images are produced using a special X-ray machine, allowing visualisation of the targeted body structure.

In certain cases, local anaesthesia, conscious sedation, or general anaesthesia are used to manage any potential pain or discomfort associated with the procedure. After completion, the contrast substance is removed, and the patient will receive post-procedural care instructions based on the specific type of fluoroscopy performed.
