UVR (Ultraviolet Radiation)

Ophthalmology treatment in Bangalore

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength in the range of 10 nm to 400 nm, shorter than that of visible light but longer than X-rays. It is present in sunlight constituting about 10% of the total electromagnetic radiation output from the Sun. It is also produced by electric arcs and specialized lights, such as mercury-vapor lamps, tanning lamps, and black lights.

UVR has both positive and negative health effects. It can cause sunburn and other forms of skin damage, leading to skin cancer. It can also cause eye damage, including cataracts. On the other hand, it is used in UV water purification systems and the production of vitamin D in humans. There are three types of UVR: ultraviolet A (UVA), ultraviolet B (UVB), and ultraviolet C (UVC). UVC is the most harmful but is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer and does not reach the Earth's surface. UVB is less harmful but can still cause damage, especially to the eyes. UVA is the least harmful but can contribute to skin damage over time. Visit our eye care hospital in Bangalore for the best treatment.

Pre-Procedure

Before having UVR therapy, your skin will be cleansed with mild soap and water. Your eyes will be protected with goggles or sunglasses. A gel or lotion may be applied to your skin to help the light pass more evenly over your skin. A fan may be used to cool your skin during the procedure.

Procedure

The procedure for UVR Therapy is quite simple and does not take much longer to perform. Some of the steps of the procedure are:

  • The person being treated lies on a table and is exposed to UV light from a lamp.

  • The length of time of the UV exposure depends on the condition being treated and the person's skin type.

  • After UV exposure, the person is typically given a cream or lotion to help soothe the skin.

  • The person may also be advised to avoid sun exposure for a period after the UV treatment.

Post-Procedure

After your Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR) exposure, it is important to take care of your skin. You will be given special instructions on how to care for your skin. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully. Your skin will be extremely sensitive to sunlight for a while. You will need to avoid direct sunlight and wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when you are outdoors. Your skin may be dry, red, and tender. You can use lotion to help relieve these symptoms. You may also experience peeling or flaking of the skin. This is normal and will go away on its own. Do not use any harsh soaps, scrubs, or exfoliants on your skin while it is healing. Do not pick at or scratch your skin. This can irritate and lead to infection. Book an appointment today for treatment of your eye.
