Normal Delivery Hospital in Yeshwanthpur

Normal delivery is also known as vaginal birth which refers to childbirth through the vagina that does not require surgical or medical intervention. The procedure of a normal delivery is divided into different stages. They include:

Stage I - Early labour and active labour

The first stage begins when the mother experiences a regular contraction, resulting in cervical dilatation, where the cervix widens up to 10 cm. Contractions also cause the cervix to soften, shorten, and thin (effacement), allowing the baby to progress into the birth canal. It is the most time-consuming of the three steps of the process. The substage of this stage are:

  • Early labour

The cervix widens and thins during early labour. The mother may experience mild irregular contractions. The mother may notice a clear, pink, slightly bloody discharge from the vagina as the cervix opens, which is most likely the mucus plug blocking the cervix's opening. For first-time mothers, the average length of this stage ranges from hours to days. The mother can adopt the following measures for comfort:

  • Take a walk

  • Listen to relaxing music

  • Take a warm bath.

  • Attempt other relaxing techniques.

  • Keep changing positions.

  • Active labour

The cervix dilates from 6 to 10 cm during this stage. Contractions grow more intense and more frequent. Mothers  may also experience symptoms like: nausea, leg cramps, increased pressure on the back and the feeling of water break.

Active labour can extend for four to eight hours or more. The cervix dilates at a rate of about 1 centimetre each hour during this stage. The mother can adopt the following measures for comfort:

  • Take a stroll

  • Take a relaxing warm bath.

  • Breathe steadily between contractions.

  • Keep changing positions.

  • Massage the belly gently between contractions.

The transition phase is the most uncomfortable and painful because the cervix dilates to its fullest at about 10 cm. The contractions during  this phase are usually strong and painful, and they continue to occur every two to three minutes for 60-90 seconds. Stage II: Pushing and delivery of the baby

This stage begins once the cervix is completely dilated. This stage can last from a few minutes to many hours or more. The mother is required to push with every contraction, which can often be exhausting. This stage is also distinguished by the following features:

  • The mother experiences intense discomfort and pain around the vaginal entrance, when the baby comes out.

  • The mother feels extreme pressure and has the impression that she needs to pass motions.

  • The doctor makes a cut to widen the opening of the vagina (episiotomy)

  • The mother's constantly pushes to get the baby out

  • The baby's head emerges first, followed by the rest of their body.

  • After the baby has come out, the umbilical cord is cut.

Stage III: Delivery of the Placenta

Following the birth of the baby, the last stage consists of delivering the placenta. The doctor would need between 5-30 minutes to remove the placenta through the vaginal opening. The mother will still experience mild contractions that are less uncomfortable and painful.  The doctor may also advise the mother to take medications to stimulate uterine contractions and prevent bleeding. The doctor may also examine to check that the placenta is intact and ensure that no parts remain in the uterus that can cause infection or bleeding.
