CRPT Procedure

CRPT Dialysis in Bangalore

CRPT stands for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, a continuous and steady process for purifying blood. This procedure performs all the functions of the kidney. A person’s kidney may fail due to accidents, disease or trauma. CRPT is recommended for patients having renal failure and liver and circulatory problems. It is also recommended for unstable patients in the ICU who cannot withstand regular dialysis.

Patients may not be familiar with this type of dialysis, requiring special expertise and skills. Most haemodialysis procedures are performed outpatient. However, CRPT is an inpatient procedure. There is less heart strain with CRPT, a slower form of dialysis. By CRPT, waste products and fluids are slowly and continuously removed from the patient 24 hours a day instead of over four hours. Dialysis circuits must be kept clot-free by special anticoagulation. Visit Manipal Hospitals to know more about CRPT Procedure in Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore.

Types of CRPT

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy is of three main types.

CRPT Membranes

Membranes are synthetic and biocompatible layers that are used in CRPT to remove as much water and waste as possible from the body. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRPT) utilises hemofilter and high-flow dialysers to filter blood. Proteins are absorbed and purified efficiently through these membranes. Dialysers and hemofilter can reduce or remove the size of cytokines. Cytokines can cause inflammation and severe kidney complications in the body if they are not eliminated.

Continual Venovenous Hemofiltration

Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration is used in CRPT to purify blood and control volume. A physiological fluid passes through the body to remove waste and purify the blood. Aside from reducing instability risks, these fluids also replace electrolytes lost through sweat. This type achieves the removal of wastes and other products with ultrafiltration and convection. CVVH is another name for this technique. Book an appointment at our multi-speciality hospital today.

Continual Venovenous Hemodialysis

Continual Venovenous Haemodialysis removes waste products with dialysate fluids. During dialysis, dialysate fluids increase the likelihood of better results. Continual Venous Haemodialysis helps in faster removal of molecular wastes. Dialysis fluids can be obtained from various sources, but they are less expensive and more effective than other dialysis fluids. Electrolytes in these fluids maintain healthy and resistant blood cells.

Advantages of CRPT Procedure

  • Blood and tissue are cleansed of toxins

With this procedure, harmful uremic toxins can be eliminated from the blood and tissues. In CRPT therapy, the penetrable hemofilter purifies the blood and flushes out waste products and chemicals from the body.

  • Fewer side effects

Since CRPT removes toxins and other fluids slowly, it has minimum side effects than intermittent haemodialysis. It reduces the risk of hypotension by allowing intravascular water to refill from the tissue.

  • Absolute results

CRPT not only helps flush out the wastes from the kidney but also helps maintain the acid and essential fluid balance, osmotic pressure and electrolyte balance.

Complications of CRPT Procedure

Even though CRPT represents a potentially life-saving procedure for these patients, it represents an artificial kidney that is not physiologic, which may hamper the treatment's potential benefits. In CRRT systems, different parts can cause different complications. Some of the common medical complications arising out of CRPT are

  • Bleeding

  • Blood clots

  • Anaemia

  • Hypothermia and heat loss

  • Air embolism

  • Dysfunction of vascular access

  • Fluid balance errors

  • Complications due to immune system activation

  • Haemorrhage

  • Hypotension
