Tracheostomy Treatment Procedure in Yeshwanthpur

A tracheostomy is a simple surgical procedure but needs an experienced hand. It provides an artificial path for oxygen to enter the lungs when breathing alone is impossible after a trauma, accident, or medical condition. An incision or cut is made in the front portion of the neck that directly goes into the windpipe.  To make breathing possible, a tube called the tracheostomy tube is then fixed into this cut or hole.

When is Tracheostomy Required?

  • Oxygen is to be delivered to the lungs, especially if there has been an accident, injury to the organ, or due to weak muscles preventing normal breathing.

  • There is a blockage of your throat that prevents breathing.

  • There is a risk of choking or aspiration due to solid food or liquid entering the lungs and the inability to cough these out.

The tracheostomy tube inserted in the incision is usually covered with tape to hold it in place. Sometimes, stitches may be used. The healing time after a tracheostomy will vary depending on the patient. It takes about a fortnight to recover from a tracheostomy.

Post Procedure Care

The discharge period after a tracheostomy will depend upon your medical condition. Decannulation is the process by which the tracheostomy tube is removed. The surgical hole is closed, and you may be discharged. You may also be discharged with the tracheostomy tube still in place.

Urgent tracheostomies are immediate and urgent procedures. They arise in case of accidents or injuries and are not mostly done under anaesthesia.
