Skull-based tumours
The skull base is the area at the bottom of the skull where the brain and spinal cord meet. Tumours in this area are difficult to treat because they are close to critical structures in the brain. Pituitary tumours
Pituitary tumours are growths that develop in the pituitary gland, located at the brain's base. These tumours can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Pituitary tumours are usually treated with surgery. If the tumour is small and benign, it can often be removed through a minimally invasive procedure called transsphenoidal surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon accesses the pituitary gland through the nose. For larger tumours or for tumours that have spread to other parts of the brain, a more complex surgery may be necessary. In these cases, the surgeon may work with a neurosurgeon to remove the tumor. After surgery, the pituitary gland may need to be replaced with medication.
