Dr Sinukumar Bhaskaran, consultant, adult joint replacement and reconstruction and robotic arthroplasty (hip & knee), Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, explains what women can do about their knees. Women are more likely to sustain certain injuries: While anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur in both men and women, according to the National Library of Medicine Research, women are two to eight times more likely than males to sustain one of these conditions such as ACL injuries, osteoarthritis and patellofemoral pain syndrome. Women showed a much lower knee adduction moment than men but a significantly higher stride regularity. Weight, BMI, discomfort and impairment were the most common factors explaining variations in gait mechanics among female individuals. In males, differences in gait mechanics were mostly explained by age and disabilities.

One significant change happening today, is that early-onset arthritis is more prevalent than initially believed, and the condition is frequently diagnosed in elderly individuals. Individuals who are young with this condition need a complete evaluation of the etiologic factors and pathophysiologic processes involved. A multifactorial interaction between genetic, immunologic, and environmental factors is the cause of the heightened susceptibility of young joints to arthritic disorders. Childhood autoimmune illness (JIA) and other inflammatory conditions are among the risk factors for this disease. Synovial tissue-specific pathological immune responses result in chronic inflammation and progressive articular degeneration. These diseases are pathological. Joint issues are more common in those who are genetically predisposed or have autoimmune Disease. But they can be easily influenced by any disease.

An inflammation in the digestive tract can be caused by Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which can be of two main types: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, and worsen over time. Managing Crohn's disease usually involves taking prescribed medications and maintaining a healthy diet; however, all of it begins with early detection. While Crohn's disease is often associated with digestive issues, some symptoms may seem unrelated and can easily be overlooked. Recognising these unusual signs is crucial for timely diagnosis and effective management.

Ankle sprains are common and can occur due to sports or everyday activities. They range from mild overstretching to full ruptures of ligaments. Preventing sprains involves strengthening exercises, proper footwear, and awareness. If injured, follow RICE, pain management, and rehabilitation. Severe cases may require medical attention or even surgery for ruptured ligaments.

The immune system is your body’s defence force, protecting you from viruses and harmful bacteria. But sometimes, it gets confused and starts attacking your own body instead of foreign invaders. This is what happens in autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. Most people know that autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disorders affect the body. But what’s less talked about is how these conditions can also impact the brain and nervous system. Many people with autoimmune disorders experience nerve pain, memory issues, muscle weakness, and even paralysis. According to Dr. Mahesh Jadhav, Consultant - Neurology at Manipal Hospital, Pune, neurological autoimmune disorders (NADs) occur when the immune system mistakenly destroys nerve cells. “Depending on which part of the nervous system is affected, symptoms can vary widely,” he says. Scientists are now learning how closely linked the immune system and the nervous system are.

As the world's population continues to grow and life expectancy rises, more people are reaching their older years, when neurological disorders are most prevalent. Multiple neurological diseases (NDs) are more common in India due to both geographic and environmental causes. These conditions, which include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), epilepsy, stroke, Huntington's disease (HD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and others, involve the progressive or total loss of neuronal structure and function. Medical professionals are still unsure of the precise cause of several disorders. However, oxidative stress, inflammation, environmental variables, mitochondrial deficits, genetics, protein degradation, and aberrant protein accumulation could all be contributing causes.

An enlarged uterus is common during pregnancy. However, it may also occur in non-pregnant women. Here’s how you can tell if you are suffering from the same. Did you know that the average uterus of an adult female is about 8 cm long, 5 cm wide, and 4 cm thick? The uterus is defined as a hollow muscular organ located in the female pelvis between the bladder and the rectum. Interestingly, the uterus can expand up to 20 times its original size during pregnancy. However, an enlarged uterus can also occur in non-pregnant women and can be concerning.
An enlarged uterus occurs when the uterus grows larger than usual. This can happen for several reasons. According to Dr Kunwar, adenomyosis and fibroids are two of the most common causes of an enlarged uterus, while there are other contributing factors as well. “Hormonal changes, especially elevated oestrogen levels, can lead to the development of uterine fibroids, which are benign growths in the uterine muscle layer. To cause uterine enlargement, adenomyosis, a disorder in which the lining of the uterus develops into the muscle wall, is commonly linked with painful and heavy periods,” she explains.

Anaemia is a blood disorder that occurs when people have low Red Blood Cell (RBC) and haemoglobin levels. This is why many individuals wonder whether donating blood can lead to the condition. But here’s the truth.
Blood donation is a noble act, but it is crucial to assess your health first and consider the potential risks before donating. Since you lose blood, your body also loses some amount of Red Blood Cells (RBCs), which contain haemoglobin and iron, causing fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and easy bruising. However, this isn’t always the case.
A common concern among frequent donors is whether or not blood donation can lead to anaemia, a blood disorder caused by insufficient levels of RBCs or haemoglobin. Dr Vichar Nigam, Consultant - Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, addresses this doubt and helps clear the air around the same.
Dr Nigam shares that blood donation does not lead to anaemia. However, a haemoglobin check is mandatory before donation to ensure individuals with borderline haemoglobin levels aren't pushed into anaemia, he notes.
What really causes anaemia is iron deficiency due to inadequate iron intake, certain infections, genetic disorders, chronic diseases, and heavy blood loss (unlike well-monitored blood donations).

Perimenopause can cause various changes in the body, including changes in gut motility, which can lead to constipation. An expert explains the link and shares ways to manage perimenopause-related constipation. While menopause is a reproductive milestone that marks the end of the menstrual cycle, perimenopause is a phase leading up to menopause. It is a transitional phase wherein a woman's hormone levels start to decline, leading to symptoms like hot flashes and irregular periods. Additionally, some women in their perimenopausal stage also complain of experiencing digestive issues, such as constipation. To find out whether constipation is linked to perimenopause, the OnlyMyHealth team spoke Dr Rushali Nikhil Jadhav, Consultant—Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune.
