Sebaceous Cyst Treatment in Kolkata
Overview
Sebaceous cysts are painless, small, non-cancerous, slow-growing bumps beneath the skin. They contain a semi-liquid or liquid material and generally occur on the neck, face or other areas in the torso. They grow slowly and they are not life-threatening.
Pre Procedure
No specific instructions are required to be followed before the procedure.
During Procedure
- An invasive procedure is generally recommended for removing sebaceous cysts. The procedure takes around 10-15 minutes, depending on the type and size of the cyst. It is performed by a doctor, who is assisted by a nurse at all times.
- The patient will be asked to sign a consent form, after which, they will be moved to a comfortable area where their privacy will be respected throughout the procedure.
- The site of the cyst is first exposed, which is followed by the covering of the body with a blanket/bedsheet. After that, betadine solution is used to clean the site.
- The doctor gives the patient local anaesthesia via injection. An incision is then made to remove the cyst from the underlying tissue.
- The cyst sample is then sent to the laboratory for a biopsy. If the cyst is not infected, the site is disinfected and sutured. Incision and drainage is generally done in case of an infected sebaceous cyst. Finally, a waterproof dressing is used to cover the area. The patient will be asked to come back to the OPD after a week for suture removal. For dressing removal, the patient may be asked to visit the OPD daily.
Post Procedure
- The patient may be given antibiotics and painkillers after the completion of the procedure. The site must be kept dry till it heals completely. The patient should avoid taking baths. However, they can sponge bathe. The doctor must be immediately contacted in case of bleeding from the site or soakage.
- No dietary restrictions are required to be followed after the procedure and the patient may resume their routine activities.
- Biopsy reports are shared with the patient three days after the completion of the procedure.
