Lipoma (Lumps in the body)

Lipoma Treatment in Mysore

A lipoma is a fatty tumour located between your skin and underlying muscle. Lumps in the body are not cancerous and generally harmless. A lipoma feels rubbery and doughy and moves with touching. Most lipomas are usually harmless and not painful. They do not cause any major health problems. However, if a lipoma is causing discomfort, it can be removed surgically. Lipomas develop mostly in areas such as arms, legs, neck, shoulders, chest, forehead, and back.

Types

Most lipomas contain fat besides other tissues and blood vessels. Various lipoma types include:

  • Fibrolipoma -  Fibrous tissue and fat are contained in this lipoma.

  • Myelolipoma - It contains fat and tissues that produce blood cells.

  • Pleomorphic - Contains aft cells of various sizes and shapes.

  • Spindle Cell Lipoma - Here, fat cells are spindle-shaped.

  • Atypical Lipoma- Contains deeper fat and a larger number of cells.

  • Hibernoma - It contains brown fat, unlike other lipomas, where white fat is common.

  • Conventional - The most common lipoma contains white fat cells that store energy.

  • Angiolipoma - Contains a large number of blood vessels and fat and is often painful.

Causes

Lipomas can be used either due to genetics, where someone in the family has lipoma or due to some of the causes given below. However, it is not sure what the exact cause is triggering the lipomas to grow. The lipoma causes include:

  • Hereditary multiple lipomatosis

  • Gardner syndrome

  • Dercum’s disease

  • Madelung’s disease

  • Any other extreme injuries

  • Moveable

  • Smaller than 2 inches

  • Round or oval shaped

Diagnosis

Your healthcare provider or doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination to understand your lipoma. Doctors examine the lipoma to feel whether it’s painful or tender. To confirm the lipoma is not cancerous, a biopsy is conducted, which includes removing a piece of lipoma tissue or a sample to test it in the laboratory. Lipomas should not be confused with cysts since they look alike. For further diagnostic solutions, the doctor may suggest imaging tests such as MRI, CT scan, and Ultrasound to examine lipoma in detail.

These imaging tests confirm whether its a lipoma or cyst, the location of the lipoma, the depth of the lipoma, and the number of blood vessels in the lipoma tumour. Whether the lipoma is pressing against your nerves is also known in an imaging test.

Treatment

Being a noncancerous fatty growth beneath the skin, lipomas are benign soft tissue tumours that are not harmful and do not cause adverse health benefits. While some patients require surgery to remove lipoma because it is painful, others might require surgery for cosmetic benefit. Be it any case. A doctor will recommend the best surgical procedure based on the lipoma size, the number of tumours, medical history, and medical condition. Various lipoma surgical treatments are performed as follows:

  • Lipoma Surgery

In certain cases where a large skin tumour is present that is still growing, here lipoma surgery is mostly required to remove it. An incision is made to remove the lipoma and then the incision is sewed after removing the lipoma. Manipal Hospitals, Mysore, offers Lipoma Excision.

  • Liposuction

Since lipomas are fat-based, liposuction surgical treatment can reduce the size of the lipoma. However, this surgery may not completely remove the lipoma. Book an appointment to have the best treatment.

  • Steroid Injections

These injections can shrink the lipoma tumour size but do not completely remove it. Here, steroid injections are used directly on the affected area.
