Stapedotomy Treatment in Mysore

A stapedotomy is a surgical procedure used to treat a type of hearing loss called otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is a condition in which the stapes bone, one of the small bones in the middle ear, becomes stiff and fails to vibrate correctly in response to sound. This can cause hearing loss and other problems with hearing. A stapedotomy is a surgical procedure to restore the stapes bone's normal function. The surgery is typically performed using an operating microscope and specialised instruments. The surgeon will make a small incision in the ear and carefully remove the middle ear bones, including the stapes.

Pre-procedure:

  • Before the stapedotomy procedure, the patient will undergo several tests, such as a physical exam, hearing test, imaging tests, and a CT scan. This will allow the doctor to assess the patient's condition and plan for the procedure.

  • The patient will also have to follow specific pre-operative instructions before the procedure. These include stopping any medications that may increase the risk of bleeding, fasting before the surgery, and avoiding certain activities such as smoking, drinking alcohol, and exercising. The patient may also need to monitor their blood pressure and heart rate to ensure they are in a suitable condition for surgery.

  • The patient will also be required to sign a consent form. This form indicates that the patient has been informed of the risks associated with the procedure and gives consent for it to proceed. Book an appointment to have the best treatment.

  • The patient will then be taken to the operating room where the procedure will take place.

Procedure:

  • The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes about 30-60 minutes. The surgeon will make a tiny incision in the eardrum and insert a small surgical tool into the middle ear. The tool is then used to remove the stapes bone from its resting place carefully.

  • Once the stapes bone has been removed, the surgeon will insert a prosthetic device, known as a prosthesis, into the middle ear. The prosthesis will substitute for the stapes bone and allow sound waves to travel more quickly through the middle ear.

  • The surgeon will then attach the prosthesis to the incus bone and seal the incision with a small patch. A small tube may also be inserted to prevent fluid from accumulating in the middle ear. Visit our ent hospital in Mysore for the best treatment.

Pre-procedure:

  • Post-procedure for a stapedotomy requires careful monitoring for complications, such as infection, hematoma, and facial nerve injury. The patient should also be closely monitored for changes in hearing, as it can take several months for the hearing to fully recover.

  • To reduce the risk of infection, the patient should receive antibiotics before and after the procedure. The ear should be kept clean and dry following the process. The patient should also avoid swimming or getting water in the ear for several weeks.

  • The patient should also receive regular follow-up visits with the otolaryngologist. During these visits, the doctor will assess the patient’s hearing, evaluate the prosthesis, and look for any signs of infection.
