Pacemaker Implantation in Mysore

An artificial Cardiac Pacemaker, Cardiac Pacing Device, or simply Pacemaker, is a small electrical device implanted in the chest to help control the heartbeat. A pacemaker generates electrical impulses that cause the heart chambers to pump blood, thereby preventing the heart from beating too slowly (bradycardia). Pacemakers only work when needed. If your heartbeat is too slow, the pacemaker plays its role by correcting the beat. Advanced pacemakers nowadays also have sensors that detect body motion and breathing rate and increased heart rate during exercise, as needed. The implantation of a pacemaker in the chest requires surgery.

Types

  • Single Chamber Pacemaker

This pacemaker carries electrical impulses to the right ventricle of your heart

  • Dual Chamber Pacemaker

This carries electrical impulses to your heart's right ventricle and right atrium to control the timing of contractions between two chambers.

  • Biventricular Pacemaker

Also known as cardiac resynchronisation therapy, this pacemaker type is implanted in patients with arrhythmias or heart failure. As the name suggests, this pacemaker stimulates both (bi) lower chambers of your heart to make the heart beat more efficiently.

Diagnosis

If the patient requires the implantation of a pacemaker or otherwise is decided on the diagnosis. Following diagnostic solutions are performed to find the cause of irregular heartbeat and whether implantation is required:

Before procedure

  • Whether the patient will be fully awake, lightly sedated with local anaesthesia (one-time injection of medicine to numb the small targeted area) or fully sedated with general anaesthesia depends on the specific health conditions of the patient. Book an appointment to have the best treatment.

  • Pacemaker surgical procedure may take a few hours to complete

  • The sedative is given through IV into the forearm or hand to help relax the patient

Procedure

  • The patient’s chest is cleaned with the special soap

  • Few incisions are made at the chest to carry out the pacemaker implantation process

  • Patients can be worry-free as the pacemaker surgical process is less painful and minimally invasive surgery, with faster healing and more minor wounds

  • One or more wires are inserted into the major vein near your collarbone and guided to the heart by using X-ray images

  • Now doctor inserts a catheter in a vein in the groin thereby guiding the pacemaker through the catheter

  • Directly pacemaker is successfully placed in the proper position in the heart

After the procedure

  • The patient is advised to stay for a day at the hospital after the pacemaker is implanted.

  • The implanted pacemaker is programmed to fit the patient’s heart rhythm

  • Any heavy and vigorous exercises are to be avoided for at least a month

  • If the patient is experiencing any discomfort or pain in the pacemaker area, immediately contact your doctor for assistance. Visit our cardiology hospital in Mysore for the best treatment.

Results

  • After the successful pacemaker implantation, patients can improve symptoms such as fainting, light-headedness, etc.

  • A pacemaker allows the patient to lead more actively, promoting a healthy heart.

  • Pacemaker evaluation can be done remotely, where your pacemaker sends all the information to the doctor without requiring a physical visit.

  • The pacemaker battery typically lasts for 5 to 15 years. A new battery can be replaced through a quick surgery, requiring less recovery.
