Balloon Mitral Valvotomy Treatment in Malleshwaram

Balloon Mitral Valvotomy
The mitral valve is a valve with two flaps in the heart that lies between the left atrium and the left ventricle. Sometimes, the valves don't open or close properly, disrupting the blood flow through your heart to your body and also causes blood to leak backward to the left atrium. The valve may also be narrowed. Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty is a procedure used to widen the mitral valve to allow blood to flow more easily through the heart.

Solutions
A balloon mitral valvotomy is the preferred treatment for mitral valve stenosis. It is usually recommended if you also have moderate to severe stenosis and if most of your mitral valve is a normal shape. A catheter is inserted into the artery in the groin or arm. When the tube reaches the narrowed mitral valve, a balloon device located on the tip of the catheter is immediately inflated. The narrowed or fused mitral valve leaflets are separated and stretched open as the balloon presses against them. This process increases the size of the mitral valve opening and allows more blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle.

Complexities
Risks could include - mitral valve regurgitation where the valve might be damaged so it doesn't close normally and allows blood to leak backward in the heart; Restenosis where the valve can become narrow again after 10 to 20 years and you may require valve replacement surgery.

Success of BMV
Around 95 out of 100 patients who are treated with a balloon valvotomy have successful outcomes and almost immediate relief from persistent symptoms. While balloon valvotomy doesn't cure the condition or make the valve normal, it helps the valve function normally to let blood flow through the heart.
