Children suffering from severe and life-threatening conditions are required to be admitted to the PICU. The PICU is equipped with life-saving machines to manage emergency conditions in those below 18 years of age. The advanced diagnostic facilities help in initiating early treatment. The conditions requiring PICU admission are Acute Respiratory Distress, apnoea, sepsis, trauma, seizures, poisoning, trouble breathing, accidents and cardiovascular complications.
Both the units are for managing severe and life-threatening conditions. However, the type of patients varies. While NICU focusses more on the diseases associated with newborn, PICU handles life-threatening conditions of patients aged one month to 18 years.
The PICU team strictly follows infection control protocols. All the people entering the unit must remove the footwear and wash their hands. The doctors place the children, with a high risk of infection, in isolation cubicles.
There is no set timeline when the child is shifted to the general ward or discharged from the hospital. It varies between medical conditions. The doctor shifts the child from PICU if he is out of danger.
The PICU team comprises various members working in coordination to provide the best medical care to children. The medical staff provides the treatment while the nursing staff takes care of the children. The patient-care coordinator helps the parents with finance and billing, and the dietician provides the best diet for children to ensure a fast recovery.
