Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Manipal Hospital is a multidisciplinary advanced intensive care unit. The PICU is a referral center for children with multidisciplinary problems with varying grades of severity from all over the country. We admit 600-700 patients in a year with all problems, both medical and surgical, involving every organ system with no exceptions. The PICU is well equipped with state of the art infrastructure (ventilators both invasive and noninvasive, High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilators, High Flow Nasal Cannula Systems, Multi-Channel Monitors, Invasive Haemodynamic Monitoring Systems, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Intermittent Hemodialysis, Bedside Ultrasound and ECHO Cardiography facilities, round the clock radiology, blood bank and laboratory services and others) to cater to the complex needs of the children admitted to the unit. The ICU is run by a team of professional Paediatric Intensivists with more than a decade of experience in the field of pediatric intensive care. They are specially trained for Paediatric ICU from the best centers in India and from abroad. The team also provides support outside the unit, within the hospital, through the Paediatric Medical Emergency team (PMET).
The aim of the service is to constantly provide monitoring and support to sick children admitted in the wards, outside the ICU, and ensure emergency care proactively to enable recovery. The team provides support for families of children needing home oxygen and home ventilation with or without tracheostomy. The PICU team is well supported by a team of paediatric subspeciality specialists (Paediatric Paediatric ICU (PICU) Emergency, Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Pulmonology, ENT, Op h t h a l m o l o g y, G a s t r o e n t e r o l o g y, Haematooncology, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Paediatric Endocrinology, Spine Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Genetics, Paediatric Nephrology, Transplant Medicine). We take great pride in working tog e th e r with this group of well-qualified specialists for the betterment of the child. The team also has great support from a highly dedicated nursing team who are not only well qualified but also trained to recognise and handle problems exclusive to the tender age group they care for. Our nurses are aware of the stress, the families of our patients undergo and understand what it takes to comfort them and channelize all their stress into being partners in caring for the child. The team also is supported by a social work department, clinical nutrition, physical medicine, and rehabilitation.
The department has an active teaching programme for postgraduates and also runs a fellowship programme for pediatric intensive care which is rated as one of the best in the country. We follow the best available evidence and the most recent practices worldwide in providing care for sick children. We strive to do it considering family members as our partners in providing care. What keeps us going is the joy of working for the little ones, the joy of seeing their parents smile coming back and the challenge to keep improving every day to better ourselves in dealing with the problems of these little ones because they deserve nothing but the best.
