Integrated System Solution for Swallowing Diagnostics

What is dysphagia?

Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that most commonly occurs as a result of ageing. Conditions like stroke, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis that generally affect older people sustainably damage the swallowing behaviour, resulting in dysphagia.

How does the Integrated System help in diagnosing swallowing disorders?

Dysphagia is diagnosed through the endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. A customised integrated system therefore offers:

  • A maximum mobile solution for flexible endoscopy.

  • A comprehensive software, which enables simple and direct documentation of findings.

The presence of an integrated tablet PC also allows:

  • Live images to be displayed.

  • Images and videos created during the investigation in the patient record to be saved.

Moreover, the system’s compact design allows easy transport.

BERA

What is BERA?

Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) is a tool used to determine a child’s hearing ability.

How does it work?

A special computer is used by audiologists or hearing specialists to identify certain neurological ‘markers’ that help measure the responses of the child’s hearing nerve to different sounds.
Functional assessments such as auditory brainstem response (ABR) and behavioral audiometry play an integral part in pediatric cochlear implantation batteries.

Departments and Clinics

BSBI has dedicated departments and clinics to assess, diagnose and treat each individual condition. Notable ones include:

Advanced Skull Base Diagnostic Unit

What are the main features of the Advanced Skull Base Diagnostic Unit?

Our unit is well equipped with innovative technologies including:

  • Superior endoscopic imaging and video

  • Hand instruments

  • Integrated light source

  • Endoscope management

  • Camera

  • Stroboscopy module

This comprehensive workstation provides optimised workflows for the examining surgeon, while also ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure.

Comprehensive Audiology

What are the services provided by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (ASLP) Department?

  • Staffed by skilled therapists, this department is responsible for performing:

  • Comprehensive hearing assessment

  • Hearing aid evaluation and fitting

  • Auditory training and speech reading

  • Counselling and Central auditory processing (CAP) testing

The ASLP unit also runs a top-notch Cochlear Implant programme and perform newborns hearing screening and therapy for tinnitus.

Audiovestibular training for cochlear implants

Why is rehabilitation therapy necessary?

Rehabilitation therapy maximizes the benefits of the Cochlear Implant. Audiologists, teachers, and speech language pathologists teach the patient wearing the implant how to listen with the implant, and understand speech (and talk).

What are the key functions of this unit?

The unit performs CI mapping and follow-up as well as speech perception test battery to assess unilateral CI progress and/or bilateral CI candidacy, as warranted.

Vertigo Clinic

What are the services provided at the Vertigo Clinic?

Our vertigo centre provides the following services to assess inner ear function and help diagnose vestibular neuritis, BPPV, central vestibular disorders:

  • VNG (Video-nystagmography)

  • Cervical and ocular VEMPs (Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials)

What are the advantages of vestibular rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is proven to be the most effective form of treatment for several forms of vestibular disorders. Maneuvers and personalized vestibular exercise programs are generally performed for BPPV.

Voice & Speech Clinic

What is the key objective of the Voice & Speech Clinic?

Our clinic aims to provide comprehensive, advanced evaluation and management of voice disorders.

What conditions are treated at this clinic?

Assessing the voice involves acoustic and aerodynamic analysis. The following services are offered to patients at the Voice & Speech Clinic:

  • A Videostroboscopy is designed to assess the motion and pliability of the vocal folds for voice production.

  • For people with severe communication impairments, the unit conducts evaluations for the use of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.

  • Both functional and organic voice problems are managed.

  • Various phonosurgical techniques like laryngeal injection techniques, laryngoplasty, and phonomicrosurgery are performed.

Swallowing & Dysphagia Clinic

What is the key objective of the Dysphagia Clinic?

The Dysphagia Clinic serves not only as a research facility, but also as an instructional lab. Equipped with advanced equipment, the Dysphagia lab supplies educational and clinical experience required by students striving to become Speech-Language Pathologists.

What are the services provided by this clinic?

The following services are offered by the clinic:

  • A number of state-of-the-art equipment is utilized to evaluate and analyze the temporal and biomechanical aspects of swallowing.

  • Assessments are conducted to assist individuals with swallowing difficulty.

  • The anatomy and physiology of the swallow mechanism is assessed by the SLP and radiologist using an instrumental procedure known as the Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBS), also known as a video-fluoroscopic swallow study. This test evaluates the most appropriate postural positions and consistencies that are most safe and tolerable for patients with dysphagia.

Additional Facilities Besides the general departments and clinics, BSBI also provides additional facilities to enhance patient comfort. These include:

Rooms & Suites

To maximize patient comfort, patients are allowed to choose a room of their choice. These include:

  • Ultra deluxe single bedded room

  • Single bedded room

These rooms are well furnished and are maintained at the highest standards of hygiene.

Hybrid Operation Theatre

This is a concept wherein an operating suite is integrated with a cath laboratory and can be used for microsurgery as well as simultaneously for cerebrovascular intervention. It consists of a two-in-one operating room having the most sophisticated operating facility alongside a miniaturized cerebral angiography suite.

What are the advantages of the hybrid operation theatre?

Angiography can be performed within the operating room to help with:

  • Diagnosis

  • Tumor embolization

  • Clot retrieval

  • Bleeding control

  • Blood flow studies

  • Stent deployment

  • Blood vessel preservation

The hybrid operation theatre mainly comprises two operating teams that can work together: one team can perform micro-surgery and simultaneously other teams can help assist, compliment, and treat through endovascular techniques.

The main advantages of this operating room include:

  • Space utilization

  • The ability for both the teams to work, and complement each other particularly during complex surgeries like highly vascular tumors, brain hemorrhage, aneurysm, and arteriovenous malformations.
